    Hi

I am trying to get netmeeting off my system completely. I used the start - run command to uninstall.
One error message after running the command was error reading OXC 16422 ????

I still have the folder - tried to move and or delete but I am told it is in use by another application

I also have a M$ games folder - with nothing in it as I uninstalled all the games. I tried to delete it and get the same message

These two folders appear within my programs folder in the OS.
I am running Windows XP sp1 (HE) but it was installed for me thus the reason Netmeeting is there.

I have found out this uses a possible Trojan port which I would prefer to have closed and not sending out anything. I have a firewall & have done a Trojan scan ( I do not have an actual Trojan just this port possibilty )

On a previous post help I think I have elminated the ICQ one. It is this one that is my worry now. Port 1024.

Hopefully someone will be able to advise. Thanks.

    Hi Daizy

I MORE than welcome these links but  the instructions which include % etc ( new folder ) move ++++

I am totally unsure about this. I haven't sussed all the % thing in XP. Goodness I would love to be able to remove the folder.

Is there any possibilty that you would be able to advise me on how to go about this bit. ( Please )

I had run one of the commands - think it removed the actual program BUT the folder is doing exactly as the other post described - refusing to move - then when I look it did remove but still have the original + another copy ( which is in the bin & gone )

I feel I am getting nearer to getting rid of this completely ( thanks to you ) but just need a little bit of ABC before I can confidently work out the new folder etc

I would be really grateful if you would help me here

    miniB,

From Daizy's first link - copy and paste this into Start > Run

    RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\WINDOWS\inf\msnetmtg.inf,NetMtg.Remove

All one line - this assumes that your Windows installation is in C:\Windows.

Works fine - did it yesterday :) On cold reboot you will likely get a message about removing personalised settings for Netmeeting - YES.

Haven't checked to see if folder is still present, but will do so and post back.

    First bit done

    Hi

I ran the first bit - thank goodness you told me to click YES on cold re-boot as this happened when I rebooted after running the line the other day. I clicked yes & thought I had clicked the wrong place as I thought it maybe set it all up again

I am relieved that it hasn't. The folder will be there - mine definitely is :( :(

It's the way to remove it by % things that I do not understand

If I could do this - I would definitely sleep better tonight - yes it annoys me that much :(

    Thanks for your input.

Youre quite right ! The folder is still there, but Task Manager does not show Net Meeting running.

Incidentally the command line given in both those links is exactly the same.

For some reason this BBS does not repro. percent signs, but shows them as 96.

96 Root 96 equates to C:Windows or whatever directory Windows is in - it is a new nomenclature introduced with XP - may have been in 2000/NT, but not I think in Win 9x/Me.

I'll keep looking on this, but if the program isn't running then why worry ?

I can't delete this folder - 'in use .....'. Wonder if you need to log on as Administrator and run the remove line again. My profile has Administrator privileges, but there is also a basic Admin a/c.

    Hi PeteC

I know what you mean - I am the only user account but is Safe Mode there is an Administrator account. Wonder if we should be using it to run the command also ?

If you look at the link Daizy provided the person there had the same ' cannot move ' XP problem.

He was told to create a new folder called %SystemRoot%\oldinf & copy the other folder there.

I haven't a clue how to do this

I have run reg.first aid etc - looked in add / remove - there are a few hints in the registry but not an actual Netmeeting. The most obvious place is within the program folder. I even tried search & it came back with nothing

I have no games yet it has an unmovable folder - I will only be happy if I can remove them completely as they scare me.
If you do an online check at anti-trojan - it will show this port open - Application which uses it - Netmeeting

I ran the scan after running the remove BUT still reports the port. I do NOT have the Trojan but the port should be closed.

Hopefully we will find an fix as it is really very annoying.

I have succeeded in removing all the NetMeeting files from the folder, although I can't delete the folder . I've looked at that link again and will come back on that.

I booted to Safe Mode - logged on as myself and deleted the NetMeeting folder. Did a cold reboot - the folder is there, but it is empty.

    Hi

I am going to do the same right now - my games folder is empty but cannot be moved.

Hope we are getting closer to complete extermination !!

Just noticed you logged on as yourself - wonder if logging on as Admin. would do more ??

I just reloaded NetMeeting, rebooted to Safe Mode and logged on as Administrator and deleted the NetMeeting folder.

Cold reboot to Safe Mode and logged on as myself - the Netmeeting folder was not there.

Cold reboot to XP - the netmeeting folder is there, but empty.
ran the command line from my previous post - some files were deleted (settings ??).

Cold reboot again - folder still empty, but can't delete it - probably protected by XP.

End of story ?? BTW hope you made a System Restore Point before all this messing - filled in a wet afternoon here in Staffordshire.

    Me too

    Hi

I went into safemode ( admin ) deleted - ran reg.firstaid from there - removed all the obselete entries. Got back to XP - same as you folder stubborn !!!

One thing I do not is in the msn games folder. There is another Windows folder - suspect this is the protected bit !

I know one thing - if I have to re-install XP there will be NO NetMeeting for me ....

WE had a hail storm yesterday - today rain in Belfast but not in Bangor a few miles down the road ! AS you say it was a good way to fill the afternoon ( don't think ! ) I will have to stop being so paranoid about all this security stuff. Others do not even have AV software - I have a firewall & AV - got your updates for spyBot ??? ( Paranoid ??? )

I know what is is doing in Staffordshire as I have an e-mail friend there.

    ;)

To round things off I ran RegscrubberXp and 'fixed' all references to NetMeeting that it found - obviously you did the same with reg, firstaid.

Spybot updated very recently (today) - incidentally where do you run this online anti-Trojan from ?

    Sleep soundly :)

    Back again

    Hi

I have just anti- trojaned - no Trojans found !

I used the online scan on this site which revealed the port to me. It was one of the best searches as I had tried several - no others reported these open ports.

I downloaded the software ( 14 day trial ) it is the full version you download. If you want to purchase after the trial it is just a registration key you need. It is good that you can have all options to try with the trial version. I have actually just got a reply to tech. help I sought from them.

It takes a while to run the complete check from the software but it really searches .......

The online check will just show you open ports ( my laptop had none ) Well worthwhile doing. I then downloaded the software to see if i had any actual Trojans. If you did decide to purchase - it goes through element 5 therefore you can buy in sterling.

I had an update for it today also. It is very easy to use.

    Anti-Trojan

Have fun if you do try it out - check their are you private link ..... I checked my e-mail address to see if it could be verified - I was :) here as I was not responding !!!

Empty folder but Windows wants it - wonder if you can unprotect it ??????

    Thanks, miniB

NO open ports - I shall sleep soundly tonight, but I generally do anyway :)

    Sweet dreams

    Hi

So it's not just NetMeeting then - I still have to investigate further.

I don't sleep without 'help' - think it a big luxury that you sleep well ( worries or not )

At least there was fun online today - a bit like a netmeeting !!!!!!!
Just what we were trying to delete ...................

    This may be just a wild guess but;

From my experience with XP I would say it is not just Net Meeting.

It may well be that XP that THINKS it knows better what you need than you do.

When I tried XP for a few days, I tired deleting folder etc. that I did not need. XP would either not let me do it or let me do it then put it right back.

Give me good old 98 SE where when I want something gone it leaves and stays gone.

:) Oh yes. This is a good place for a Net Meeting. :)

miniB - jut so the % things will make sense as you will see them quite often -

They are used to "simplify" explanations. It is possible for an XP user to have the operating system installed in a folder named Windows which is the default with a fresh install, a folder named WINNT which will happen if you upgrade from Win2K, or to a folder named as the user wanted it at install time so could be literally anything. Also could be on drive C:, D:, or a bunch of others.

So, if you try to give instructions that tell the user to do something in the folder where the OS is installed, it can get really silly unless you are looking at their PC and can see how they are set up.

The work-around for this is to use some term that means "the folder where you have your operating system installed" and the two variations you see will be %systemroot% or %windir% and both mean the same thing. On a fresh XP install using the defaults, it will be C:\windows. Even a command prompt understand this convention and if you open a "DOS" window and tell it to change directories by using
cd %systemroot% it will move you to that folder.

The other major uses of this language you will see are %username% and %systemdrive%.

In all cases, they are simply shorthand terms and you need to substitute the appropriate settings for your PC.

One last example just in case I haven't beaten this to death - errr, made it clear.

    With your default system settings,

%systemdrive%\%systemroot%\system32 would simply point you to
    C:\windows\system32

    Thank You

    Hi Newt

That is the first time I have had the % thing explained to me. I was totally confused about this

  I do understand more - just one wee thing to clear up.

I know you have stated a shorthand way of saying C:/ etc

This means that I do NOT use the % to find anything I MUST replace this with the appropriate drive letter ?

I am 99.9% ( %%%% ) sure this is what you have said but me being me just wants to be 100% sure.

Thank you VERY much for picking my dilemma up about this. I will certainly help when reading the PC magazines now .........

Search over - It's Fax service who uses this port. Going to offload this. I used fax in 98se but haven't used it with XP. Will only install if I need it - Thought I would post back in case it helps someone else. ;)

One thing I have learnt a lot to get to this answer !!!!
