Hi! Is it neccessary to have all these .NF updates from 1.1 all the up to the present taking up space on the hard drive? And what about these Visual C++ updates? I don't even know what it is much alone use it. Microsoft seems to shove these down my throat with the auto update. Can't I clean all this old stuff out and install the latest one .net 4? Thanks.

That's plain BS. .NET framework is not needed for Windows to run.

.NET framework is used by 3rd party software (or even some Microsoft applications), but noting that Windows needs "out of the box ".

I've got XP running in a VM, and have several applications that need .NET, I have
    • 2.0 SP2
    • 3.0 SP2
    • 3.5 SP1
    • 4 client profile
    installed.

So I should just keep all of it then 1 thru 4 .net? Do you agree with keeping the C++? Thanks Arie.

    Lets just say Yes.

There's not much (space) to save anyway. The .NET framework folder takes up around 412 MB on my XP install, 5.5% of the size of the Windows folder.
