IMO, there is little to be gained from registry cleaning. The best you can hope for is a speed gain of a microsecond or two here and there - but is this worth the risk?

IMHO you are right. And no, ( at least to me ) it is not worth it.

Unless something is causing errors or messages of some sort

Or you are 100% sure you have a good backup before you start messing around. Win98 has a dam good and easy to restore Registry backup BUILT IN.

A good clue on running Win98 is to keep the 3rd party fixer-uppers to a minimim. None if possiible.

it is vital that you save the system registry files do you know how to do this

    dmad and merlin

That option is built into Win98. But two things MUST EXIST.

1-- Scanregisrty must be loading at startup.

2-- The machine, or at least Windows must be restarted at least once per calendar day.

This makes ( ONE per day ) RB00X.cab files that reside in the C:\Windows\Sysbckup folder.

Scanreg /restore is used to restore them.

You may also make one of your own by running Scanerw in the Start/Run line.

I created a batch file I call regscrub.bat which is pretty effective in cleaning up Win98 registries. If you want to look at it, I have it posted on my web page. There are actually two files and both have to be copied to a pathed directory. This can only be run from a "clean" DOS boot, not from a DOS window. If you want to check it out, follow this link:

    http://web.lemoyne.edu/~dishawjp/dos5.htm

Scroll down to regscrub and copy both files (use notepad) to a pathed directory. Type regscrub at the DOS prompt, sit back and let it happen. I highly recommend also copying the regback.bat and regrest utilities first and using them to back up your registry first just in case something bad happens.

My regscrub uses (undocumented) switches to the DOS version of regedit to do a lot of the work, but I have used it successfully on many computers to get rid of tons of worthless registry entries. It will get rid of a lot more "fat" than Microsoft's regclean.

    Good luck!

    win98 system file backups.........

    This pretty well covers it:
    http://www.windows-help.net/windows98/start-145.shtml

If you have any problems understanding any of this just append to post.

Do recommend downloading and using sredit to further customize the files scanreg backs up. It adds the equally important [to many users] autoexec.bat config.sys and msdos.sys files plus what ever else it added [foggy recognition] to the routine backup process.

    More info on scanreg.ini customization:
    http://www.windows-help.net/windows98/tune-32.shtml

    Dirrect link to download sredit.zip:

    All I have to add now is;

BEFORE doing any reg cleaning using any type of software. Whether it be Microsoft or 3rd party.

#1--Make sure you have a floppy boot disk that works. Also the scanreg.exe from the C:\Windows\Command folder can be copied to the Start up Disk to be used if needed. But if this is done TEST it to be sure it is going to work. I have used it a few times and there seem to be no problem.

#2--MAKE SURE that Scanregistry is doing its job of making the rb00x.cab. If not FIX IT BEFORE going any further.

#3--DO NOT put all your eggs in one basket. ( Alias. Do not put full trust in just one piece of software. )

#4--When doing any type of reg cleaning the " What if ?" and " Just in case " rules must be applyed.

Always give yourself more than one way out. And the floppy boot and Scanreg /restore is one of them.

I write this because I have seen TOO MANY cases where something was tried and there was no way out other than re-install of Windows. A couple of cases did not even have a startup disk. The excuse I got was " Why do I need that ? "

YES folks. I was one of those cases. JUST ONCE

Of course this note refers to only 98 FE and SE. ME and XP are a different story.

And for anybody using Win95. 98 Scanregistry can be added to it.

dmad, thanks for the kind words.
If you want to convert a .gif file to an .ico file there are plenty
of free apps around. I think maybe IrfanView (free) will do it.
If you are stuck, mail me the .gif files you want to set as icons
and I will mail them back as .ico files
