Hi. To preface my question, let me just say that I've hardly ever posted in forums, so I apologize in advance if I do something wrong in the course of this posting.

I was recently tasked with fixing a client's NEC machine. She'd had a friend reinstall Windows XP for her, and the friend didn't save the drivers from the previous incarnation of XP. The NEC website has a minimal list of drivers and lacks important things like drivers for audio and video controllers.

The computer still has, as far as I can tell, its NEC-RESTORE partition intact as the third partition after Windows (C:\) and a virus-riddled-but-now-hopefully-cleaned-up data partition (D:\). I was hoping that restore function would restore all the drivers as restore functions are wont to do, but I have no idea how to actually access that particular function. There are no prompts before the bootscreen, and, obviously, no NEC-written executables on the C:\ drive that accesses such a restore function.

She's also lost her manual, and an Internet search didn't turn up anything more than "What's this En-Ee-See Restore thingie? CAN I DELETE IT? Pleeeease?" So the grand question:

How does one go about using the NEC-Restore function?

    Thanks in advance,
    -Terry

guardianangelz - Welcome to the Board :)

I can't help you directly re. the restore as you have obviously Googled which would be my first option.

It would be helpful if you would post the model no. of the computer to identify it further.

Regarding drivers - I am not clear whether or not the computer is actually running - limping on I guess, so download Everest and run it on the NEC - this will give you detail of the audio/video, etc from which you should be able to find drivers on the Web.

The computer is an NEC PC-VL570BD desktop. Hiren's 'Unknown Devices' told me that, among other things, the audio controller is an "Intel 82830M/MG/MP SDRAM Controller / Host-hub Interface (A6-step) ". The problem I had searching for the driver itself is the only mention I found of an 82830 was a video controller, and that was on the Intel website. I pretty much gave up there, and didn't even attempt to search for the other three missing drivers. I must admit, I'm not entirely up-to-date with (Intel's) hardware technologies, so I have no idea if the 82830 is a chipset or both an audio and video controller or if that Hiren program completely messed up its IDing the audio controller.

Any NEC owners? with manuals? *begs*

Yeah I can read Japanese. I'm crazy like that. >.<

I'm actually a software person. I know about |---| yay much about hardware. That 121ware.com page says that the 'soundchip' is an ADI 1981B. The nearest thing to an "82830" I could find was the 'chipset', Intel's 82915GV/82801FB. I have no bloody idea what that means.

    Help?

I will try those two. The computer's not actually in my local possession, so it might be a little while until we figure out if they work or not. The other two unknown devices are, upon closer inspection, rather easy to find drivers for. I should've calmed down when I was in the spotlight with the audio/video stuff.

    Thanks!
