I've recently discovered a lot (101 infact) of new files in the Windows/temp folder. When I try to delete them I get the message files in use. I restarted in safe mode and they aren't there. They are also hidden from normal view in standard mode. Interestingly though they have names that look similar to registry entries, here's one.............

    CSE9D3E80D-EODD-4E1A-AC97-A9EB148725CE.tmp

Their existence only came to light during an anti-virus scan. EZ Armour listed them as not being possible to scan. File dates and times are typically - ten or so on start up, the remainder a couple of minutes later.

    Can anyone shed any light?

I'm throwing darts, possible refers to loading drivers / codec support for sound card.

Thanks Guys, that makes sense. But why have they suddenly appeared (presumably some update or other) and why don't they go away?

Simple experiment - disable the AC97 Audio Controller in Device Manager and reboot - then check to see if they reappear. If they don't you have your answer - they are generated/required by the AC97 controller :)

They don't appear on my m/c with a Via AC'97 Audio Controller.

Being that the rest looks like a clsid , and none of it has any google hits other than AC97, I would go with a virus or trojan which wants you to believe it is the AC97 codec.

I would like to see a hijackthis log.

I would suggest first that you boot to safe mode and run your virus scan and try to delete them in safe mode.
