"Mysterious" Drives

Troops:
I have run out of steam on this one. How it got there is a long story and may not have bearing on the actual situation.This is a WINDOWS XP Home Edition OS. I have one, uno, solamente, einz CD/DVD drive (Drive(R)) in this system. In WINDOWS EXPLORER I see two unaccounted for drives. My question is directed towards the removal of these two "mysterious" drives.
One drive is in the C partition. It is labeled Drive(D)
The second drive is listed at the same partition level as all the other partitions in my system(There are three partitions…C, D and E). In Windows Explorer this second drive is labeled Drive(F).
Let us talk about Drive(D) (NOT THE D PARTITION).
If I left click on it and try and remove it I get a message which in essence says I can’t remove it. If I examine the properties I see the READ ONLY box is checked. I uncheck it, apply and OK.
I then try and remove it. I get the can’t remove message again. I examine the properties again and the READ ONLY box has a checkmark in it. No matter what I do I cannot permanently remove the chek from the READ ONLY box…. And I can’t remove Drive(R).
Where Drive(F) came from is probably by some DVD creation process. I can’t be sure for I just happened to notice its existence. Examining its properties one sees a disk whose size is 0 and amount used is 0. I would like to get rid of this drive also but I have not tried a straight DELETE for I really don’t know what I am doing with these drives.
Anybody have any experience with how to get rid of "mysterious" drives?

Take a look in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices and let's see what it says there.

BTW, XP folders are always "Read Only" by default you can't change them. It has no bearing on your problem.

I ran regedit and looked in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices.
There was a slew of stuff but at the bottom of the listing there were entries I think pertinent to my question
They looked like this

Having seen this....now what? How does this bear on getting rid of F and D?

I was hoping you would post that entire key content so I could see if it had some corruption that might be causing this problem.

You can do that by exporting the key and then right-click and select Edit. Then copy the contents to your Clipboard and paste them in your next post.

What I would be looking for would be drive letter assignments for a particular drive identity that were being assigned to more than one drive. When that happens, I recommend deleting ALL of the Binary Values listed in the key, leaving only the default String Value listed. Then reboot TWICE. It takes two reboots to restore the system completely. Disregard any software that complains on the first reboot.

As always, export a copy of the key for backup purposes.

This may not be the cause of your problem but it's a good spot to start.

OK. Here is the info regarding the "mysterious" drives. Note also, there are two MountedDevices files.... MountedDevices and MountedDevices1.
They are not the same. The leading contents seem to differ.
I am not familiar with these types of files. I don't believe there should be two such files. Is this the problem? Any advice?

David, Clearly there has been a past problem with drive mounting. Although this may be a mere symptom of some other problem, we can clean it up and find out.

Here's what to do:

1. Rename MountedDevices1 to MountedDevices2

2. Rename MountedDevices to MountedDevices1

3. Reboot

4. Reboot once again

5. Check to see if any of the Mysteries are resolved.

6. Check to see that a new MountedDevices key was created and post its contents back here.

By way of explanation, this will force Windows to rename the drives as it mounts them, using standard convention. You will likely have to use Windows Disk managment to rename your CD Rom drive back to "R" like it was before, but that's a minor issue.

Edit: As an aside and possibly in lieu of the above, you can use TweakUI to hide the phantom drives. Open TweakUI and click on My Computer > Drives and untag the phantom drive letters. Let's try that first since it's less invasive.

TweakUI comes from MS and is one of their "Power Tools." Let's verify that you downloaded the proper file since I don't recall any four files as you have mentioned.

Get it here.

That will be an executable file to download. When downloaded, click on it and it will complete the install of TweakUI. You can dump the download after it installs of course. You should then find it listed on your program menu. You can also run it from the RUN window by typing tweakui and press enter.

Run the program and you'll see the area I referenced earlier.

I downloaded the recommended file, TweakUI, and ran it. Within the Drives catagory I unchecked the Drive(D) and Drive(F). I then shut down the computer and rebooted. I brought up WINDOWS EXPLORER. Drive(D) was still present but Drive(F) was no longer listed.

1. Rename MountedDevices1 to MountedDevices2

2. Rename MountedDevices to MountedDevices1

3. Reboot

4. Reboot once again

5. Check to see if any of the Mysteries are resolved.

6. Check to see that a new MountedDevices key was created and post its contents back here.

By way of explanation, this will force Windows to rename the drives as it mounts them, using standard convention. You will likely have to use Windows Disk managment to rename your CD Rom drive back to "R" like it was before, but that's a minor issue.

OK. Let's see if I can make this clear.
I renamed MountedDevices1 to MountedDevices2

Rebooted and looked at WINDOWS EXPLORER. Both Drive(R) and Drive(F)
were listed again.

I used regedit to see if the name changes were effected.
I saw MountedDevices2 and MountedDevices.

I thought "Well, maybe the MountedDevices to MountedDevices1 change, previously made was not accomplished." So I again I renamed MountedDevices to MountedDevices1.

I rebooted and looked at WINDOWS EXPLORER. Both Drive(R) and Drive(F)
were still listed. Using regedit I see I now have 3 files
MountedDevices, MountedDevices1, and MountedDevices2.
TweakUI shows Drives(D) and (F) as being checked.

Not really going anwhere are we? Whatdyasay now?

Indeed we are going nowhere fast! We're plowing hard ground here and may not be able to resolve this. I hate when that happens!

From what I find through searching the net, many others have had this same problem recently and there is enough evidence to indicate that it's a MS update that caused it. Many cases have cleared up when all subsequent updates were installed. There has been no definite individual update identified as the culprit or the fix. Then in at least one other case, the problem went away when a particular software was uninstalled. Some have suggested it may be caused by unplugging USB devices improperly but I doubt that.

A Google search will supply many other hits on the same subject but so far I don't see any with a "eureka" message.

Obviously you could perform a "Repair Reinstall" and it would dump all of the updates since SP2 (assuming your install CD has SP2). That would likely correct the problem without "fixing" it. That's probably more effort than it's worth given that it isn't affecting the system to any great extent.

That's all I can offer for now. I'll keep searching and post back if I run across anything that seems promising. If you get it fixed, please post back with details so that others may be helped.

From your 1st message it is unclear where you are getting you disk info. Sounds like you initially got it from opening My Computer and getting proprties from each drive.

Then you mention Device manager.

If you will tell me what Disk manager says pehaps I will go away!!!!!

Let's see if we can get this straightend out. My first sight of these 'Phantom " disks was by seeing them appear in WINDOWS EXPLORER. They are listed there as Drive(D) which appears just like a folder in Partition C. This is my primary partition containing the OS and all applications.

The second drive is listed as Drive(F). It appears, in WINDOWS EXPLORER as a DVD drive (with a DVD icon next to it).

I do have one CD/DVD drive which I have assigned the letter R. I only have one such drive in my setup. I chose "R" for I thought it was far enough down the alphabet ladder so that letter would remain assigned to that CD/DVD drive
independent of other things I might connect temporarily.

Looking at the Device Manager listing. I cannot see the drives
Drive(D) and Drive(F) listed anywhere.

Looking at the register entries I do see them assigned in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices. Appearing in that list are Drives A to F and Drive(R).

I see them also assigned when using TWEAKUI.

Have I made the situation clearer?

I would appreciate any suggestions as to what these drives are and how to get rid of them ..PROPERLY?

I have actually only one CD/DVD drive installed. I have assigned it to be Drive(R). In WINDOWS EXPLORER there is listed my 3 partitions. My primary partition is C. I have two data partitions D and E.

Now in the WINDOWS EXPLORER listing Drive (D) appears in the same way as a folder would in the C partition.

Drive(F) appears in the WINDOWS EXPLORER listing the same way as my physical CD/DVD Drive(R).

If one right clicks on MY COMPUTEr and clicks on Manage and then Disk Management I see Drive(F) and Drive(R) listed but no Drive(D)

If one goes to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Mounteddevices one sees
Drives A,C,D,E ,F and R listed

If one uses TWEAKUI one sees the same drives listed without question marks
i.e. Drives A,C,D,E ,F and R listed

Have I spelled this out sufficiently for you to see understand the nature of the problem? I would like to get rid of Drive(D) and Drive(F) but I would like to do so by knowing what I am doing.

I appreciate your thinking about this problem and if you have any suggestions I would be pleased to try them.
