Never been strong on LAN and only know enough to get by when a customer's network-related problem is fairly basic.

Just realized my own LAN irritates me unduly - the 'My Network Places' folder has a mind of its own.

The folder contains the usual stuff, like - 'Add Network Place', 'Network Setup Wizard', 'Entire Network'.

But it also contains 41 icons which represent links to the 5 or so pcs in my small home network.

My problem, and question, is about these links. Like - if I want to access any of my 5 pcs, from any other pc, ideally I'd like to see say, 5 icons.

But My Network Places seems to have its own agenda. Like I said - I have 41 links in this folder - some of which have the most arcane labels.

OK, I'm sure I've caused this to happen when I've gone looking for a specific area in my network.

But the thing that got me going, and prompted me to logon to good old reliable Windows BBS for an answer :)--)) is that I just had a flash of inspiration - why not create subfolders in My Network Places, like 'Workshop1', 'IBM Laptop', etc etc, and then I'd at least be in the ballpark for each pc.

But no, WillieG obviously didn't want this sort of unwarranted delving to occur in his OS. So there's no 'New'\'Folder' facility available in 'My Network Places'.

I guess all I'm asking here is: Is there a simple way to organize the contents of the My Network Places folder? Like, provide a simple and functional hierarchy of links?

Your comments would be very much appreciated

Network Neighbourhood generates links to network places you have visited recently. You can also create your own shortcuts, to create a more static content (either copy a network folder and paste it as a shortcut into network neighbourhood or drag the folder to network neighbourhood - which has the same effect). However, you can not create a folder structure there.

I'd suggest you build one on your desktop instead. Create a new folder called something like "Network Folders" and populate it with shortcuts to the network folders you need to access. You can create sub-folders within this folder and that will give you the structure you are looking for.

ReggieB - thanks for the tip. Yep, a desktop shortcuts folder will be the way to go.

    Cheers ;)
