admin note: this topic was split from http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=46454

I have a similar setup with my company. I am using win2003 server as a domain controller with a private nic and a public nic for vpn access. What I have come across is that the setup has an intermitten problem. some days it works just fine then in a blink of the eye the public nic pulls the same ip that the router pulls. I ask myself wt? Then i remove the configuration setting for remote access and routing, wait a few minutes, reconfigure the ras mmc, then it works again. I have searched for an answer and this post was as close to an answer I could find. Would it be better to remove the router and configure the server to act as a gateway using nat? Would the vpn still function? or should i just leave things alone and keep resetting the server?

    ip problems

well, I have tried to no avail and found nothing.
The last thing I did was got to work before everyone and pulled the cable from the private nic, waited a few seconds and the server pulled the public ip. Ithen plugged in the cable to priv nic and it worked. It has worked for a week or so, I guess i'll just continue to do that untill I can find a proper solution. thanks for all your input. :)

Sorry cleaner - I missed your post on the original thread. It's usually a good idea on this sort of forum to start your own thread even if you see an issue that is similar or even identical to yours. A link to the other thread maybe but have your own place just so you get more attention.

I am splitting your problem away from Telling Windows to choose one of two NICs and starting a new thread for it.

When you speak of your router, is it a router/switch that you have the server's 'public' NIC connected to or is it a standard router that is a part of your network?

If you have two network devices that try to use the same IP address, you will have problems. How are the two IP addresses being assigned?
