When I start up my pc I get the following error message :
Msgsrv32 this program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down ..
then the computer hangs, if I start in safe mode the same thing happens.

When I click on details the message states Msgsrv32 caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll at 017f:bff7b992.

I have tried deleting my *.pwl files (via command prompt) as stated on the Microsoft site but this did not help, I have also run a virus scan and found no problems.

    Can you help please ?

Do you have any problems with your AV program? This error is sometimes caused by a malfunctioning AV program.
I would do an online scan. Your AV program can be disabled by a virus and seem to work.

I can't start anything up to do an online scan, my pc just hangs after receiving the error message. I get no start menu or icons on my desktop, when I bring up task manager there are no tasks in the list. I have run a virus scan from command prompt and found no viruses.

Do you have any other suggestions?

    Can you bootup in safemode?
Boot up in safemode and see if you have the same problem?

If safemode does not reproduce the error, you can use msconfig to narrow this down.

This is going to take a process of elimination. Msgsvr32 is bad enough to pin down but add to that the kernel32 and the root of the problem could be any where and anything.

If you need a better understanding or are curious about what you are about to face search help.nets archives of past posts and use msgsrv32 and/or kernel32.dll as keywords narrowing it down to the win98 forum.

While in safemode it may be a good idea to virus scan and use spybot to eliminate these as culprits right off the bat. Keep in mind that idealy these must be latest versioned with the latest updated dats.

Have you installed a new sound card, or experienced any sound card driver problems?
You have something loading early in the windows startup process causing this, as Msgsvr32 loads very early, as does some AV products, sound drivers, or it might be something easily fixed by this page, though I doubt it.

    See:
    Lots of ideas here:
From removing un-needed hardware devices, such as printers or scanners and the like, particularly if these are usb, to booting to dosprompt and doing a scanreg /restore and picking a reg backup that hopefully predates your problem. These and more are in here.

Can you do a cntrl/alt/del to bring up task manager and endtask on msgsrv32?

What did you do recently that may have caused this? Any ides? (installs, uninstalls, updates, etc.)

You got a win98 emergency boot disk?

If I do ctrl/alt/delete the task list is empty so I have to do it again to shut down.

I recently installed Norton Internet Security and Blueyonder Broadband, at first everything was fine, it was only after a few days that the problem started, I just started up my pc and that was that.

I haven't got an emergency boot disk.

Thanks for the help so far.

I would say that Norton is an AV program, and it probably is the one actually conflicting Msgsvr32.
You could disable Norton from starting up, and you would still have the problem as some of it's files are loaded whenever windows starts up.
I think you might want to try uninstalling Norton, reboot. Delete all temp files and then reinstall it.

But before you do that, Restart in Dos Mode, or when windows first starts, be tapping the F8 key, so that you get the Start Menu where you could choose Command Prompt Only.
Do the command at the prompt, use the arrow keys to pick a registry dated before this happened. You should have 5 dates to choose from. Press Enter on your selection.
    scanreg /restore
Note, even though you have 5 copies of the registry backed up, you have only 3 attempts, as the first two attempts will overwrite two of your backups.

You can create a boot disk for future use by doing this.
Go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. When that opens, click on the Startup Disk tab, put a floppy into the drive, and click on Create Disk. When done, take it out, then slide the little tab over so you can see through both holes. This write protects the floppy.

    msgsvr32 invalid page fault

I tried the scanreg restore but this failed, in frustration I have now reinstalled windows and lost most of my software, at least I don't get the msgsvr32 errors now. However I now have problems with my display in that I can only get 16 colours and a display area of 640 x 480, in settings it states the display characteristics as LCD Monitor on standard PCI graphics adapter(VGA).
Any advice on how to improve this would be gratefully accepted.

You need to install your video drivers, but before that is done your motherboard drivers may need to be installed. If you do not know what your hardware is, get Everest Home Edition.

If Everest did not identify your sound card, you'll need to open the case of the computer, and determine if you have onboard sound or a PCI sound card. If you have onboard sound, you'll need to identify the motherboard manufacturer to get the drivers for it.
BTW, this question is nagging my mind and I must ask it.
Usually, when doing an overlay [reinstall} installation of windows 98, you are prompted as to which folder to install windows into. With some 98 setups, this could end up as the folder C:\Windows.000, instead of C:\Windows.
The above statement leads me to believe you have not installed windows into C:\Windows, but have a extra clean install of windows in C:\Windows.000 or something similiar. If the install had gone into C:\Windows, your registry would have been found and your installed programs not lost.
This can create problems on down the road, such as when you are installing a program, and this program puts something into the C:\Windows folder when it needs to go into C:\Windows.000, you end up with a botched install of that program.
The question is, how many folders do you have with the word Windows in it?
You could save yourself some problems, and reinstall windows, and make sure it installs into C:\Windows.
Then delete the extra installation folder.

I won't bore you with the detail but I've reinstalled Windows again and now everything is working fine, I just need to reinstall some of my software and my anti virus program although I'm not sure if that is a good idea as it seems to have caused the original problems.

Thanks for all the advice, you've saved me a lot of money as I was going to give up and buy a new pc.
