    Hi folks.
I've just formatted and partitioned my hard drive and am now trying to install windows 98 back on to my PC, but to no avail.

When I put in bot the win 98 boot disk and CD it tries to load but gets as far as trying to load the CD. I can hear the CD spin a few times then it ceases.

It then goes on to give me a DOS prompt.

Any Ideas as to what the problem might be?

I'd appreciate your help very much,
    Regards,
    Gerd,
    Ireland

    Hi Gerd,

Sounds like you don't acually have a problem :)

Boot the PC from the Boot Disk and select 'with CD support'

This will load a few things and tell you which drive letter has been assigned to your CD drive and leave you at the A: prompt.

Change to the CD drive letter noted above, e.g. type ' D: ' - without the quotes.

At the D: prompt type 'Setup' > Enter and Windows Setup should begin.

    Gerd,

Following on from your PM - several possibilities ....

The PC should make no attempt to read the CD until you have changed to the CD-ROM drive and typed 'Setup' > enter.

You may have a problem with the Win CD - can you check if it is readable in another PC?

You may have a problem with the CD-ROM drive. Any possibility of switching CD drives temporarily?

Would you please confirm that your boot disk is behaving as it should - loading generic cd-rom drivers, etc, loading diagnostic tools. etc, notifying you of the drive letter assigned to the cd-rom drive and leaving you at the A: prompt.

If all the above seems to be in order you could still try downloading another boot disk from www.bootdisk.com and trying that. If that has no effect I can only surmise that the problem lies in my first two points.
