    I have MS Word 2002 SP-2 and I recently noticed the spell checker doesn't remember some entries I've added and that the "Add to Dictionary" item in the pop-up menu is now grayed out. Is there supposed to be a Proof folder somewhere? The one I found is empty. Do I need to replace a corrupted or missing file? I still have the MS Office installation disks.

    If it helps any, I have my Windows stuff on my C:\ drive and MS Office and other apps on my D:\ drive. My Netscape 7.1 browser and its Custom Dictionary are on the E:\ drive, and they're OK.

    Ideas?

    See if one of these google groups hits help:

    http://groups.google.com/groups?num...+"Add+to+Dictionary"+"grayed+out"&btnG=Search

    copy bolded text and paste into the google toolbar type in line. Hit enter and a few hits will come up:

    microsoft word "Add to Dictionary" "grayed out "

    Use the cached links, it's quicker.

    This one may help also:

    Or see the section on spellchecker/dictionary problem:

    ==========
    If these little quickies don't help, I will open my own 2000 version and do a "help" read. They can't be to much different. I was just hoping that the above links would save us both some time. They seem to be quick to do or check for.

    goddez1: Thanks for replying. Sorry to take so long to reply, was away for several hours. Your suggestions look promising. I have to shut down for the night now but will check those links out tomorrow.

    goddez1: Your post proved to be a winner. I did as you recommended and created a new Word custom dictionary according to the directions in your links, and it works.

    Then I decided to think ahead and try to avoid having to rebuild the new Word custom dictionary word by word, as I'd done during the 2 years before it disappeared, so I went into my Netscape Custom file and copied and pasted it into the new Word Custom file. And a check showed it succeeded. Word's is a lot smarter than NS's, so there may be some unnecessary entries in the new one now, but better that than not enough.

    So it seems the original problem has been whipped. Thanks for the help.

    Hi BOBBO,

    I'm glad I could help you out. I've got no idea what you've done via Netscape, which is no surprise. I haven't used Netscpe in years. As long as this works for you, I'll consider this a "done deal ".

    Thanks for taking the time to update your post and your most welcome.
