I have had the same problem. I have a Dell machine with Win XP and the Sidewinder Joystick would not operate correctly. I went to the Dell Forum and found a lot of information about this. Number 1: The Sidewinder is not compatible with Win XP. There are no drivers available to make it so, (According to MS). Number 2: If you keep trying to install, ignore the windows that refer to Win 98 and others that say cannot, will not, etc., you may eventually get it to install. I did this and most times it comes up workable. If you get this far, look at the Device Manager and it will usually show an error.

The only problem I have is: When you load windows and the Joystick loads that time and you have to restart windows for some reason, you usually will loose it, just like it wasn't installed. If you want to use the Joystick at that time and it's "disappeared" so to speak, you can usually power down the PC, wait 20 minutes or so then start up again. it will sometimes be activated again.

I wrote Dell about this and their answer was: It's not compatible with Win XP and there are no drivers from MS available.

Long winded answer but being I'm from the Southwest it takes me a long time to say anything!!!!!

Thanks for the long wind. My son lives outside of Phoenix and he is far from that.

Guess I will have to lok for a joystick that is compatible but I will steer clear of Microsoft if only because I think that is a bad attitude. The Joystick is not that old.
