    Is it possible to read emails of a hotmail account from Mozilla Thunderbird (default installation), or do i need to download any web extension ?

    It could be possible with an external application, but I have been consistently unsuccessful with programs like FreePOPs. May be I am inept, may be the settings have been changed.
    I suggest that you do a search, but chances are that it won't work.

    These are the third party applications that supposedly work for Hotmail, and recommended by Mozilla:

    Hotmail

    Blue HttpMail

    Hotmail Popper - also works with MSN
    NOTE: Hotmail Popper is shareware.
    An older freeware version is also available.

    I did see this note on the Hotmail Popper site:
