When using the google search function in mozilla, is there a way to clear out
    the previously searched words?

    clif,

Double click the Search Bar, then Shift+Del. You can delete everything by keeping both keys depressed.

    EDIT:
The above information is for Firefox, and NOT Mozilla. See below for the Mozilla information.

    clif ...

Ramona's method doesn't work for me in Firefox. Instead, I right-click on the search window and select "Clear Search History ".

    Mark ...

Tools > Options > Privacy > History has nothing to do with the search history. Instead, those settings allow you to do two things:
    1. set the number of days Firefox maintains a history of the webpages you've accessed.

    2. clear that history, but not the search history.

    captjlddavis is right.

There's no search bar in Mozilla (only in Sidebar) or was referring to the location bar for searching.

    Clif,

You did get a bum steer on your question. We are all referring to Firefox and not Mozilla! You cannot remove the search history by clicking on the Search field in Google: http://www.google.com/ That is a Firefox only feature, and even then, only if you have enabled "Saved Form Information ".

To clear the History and the Location Bar in Mozilla:
    Edit | Preferences | Navigator | History

To ensure that the History has been deleted, press CTRL+H.
