Anyone have a decent list of good plugins for mozilla 1.7?

I get a problem with trying to play a midi file on-line. It says "loading audio file" but it never finishes.

    Hi Clif,

Some plugins are listed in Add/Remove, like Beatnik, Crescendo, etc., it is dependent on which plugin you want to remove...

I can make suggestions about the plugins you've listed, but of course the decision is yours.

I see that you have several plugins which can play midi files, and that may be your problem. Mozilla doesn't know which one to use. I find Crescendo 5.1 has the best audio quality for midi files. I let QuickTime 5.01 handle the wav files.

I also note that you have this Crescendo plugin: npmp332.dll. Unless you use Crescendo for the default player for MP3 files you can either rename, or delete the npmp332.dll file. I reinstalled Crescendo over the existing version, once I had Mozilla installed. It immediately started playing midi files.

LiveAudio does not work in Mozilla 1.7, so you can delete the npaudio.dll file

Beatnik isn't needed if you use Crescendo for midi files and QT for wav files. I find that the audio quality is poor. You can remove it via Add/Remove
However, if you prefer this player for midi files, then you will want to download the patches.hsb file, which you will find on Holger Metzger's Plugin page: http://www.holgermetzger.de/ple.html

Windows Media Player also plays Midi files, so you might want to disable the player as the default for midi files in the options.

You have two listings for Adobe Acrobat, maybe a typo?

Another suggestion for RealPlayer. Holger Metzger has a file for the RealPlayer plugin which I found made the player work in Mozilla. You can also download it on the plugin page.

That just about sums up my suggestions.

    Thanks for the feedback, Ramona.

I removed the liveaudio and beatnick and they came back. I think i will also
have to remove them from netscape also ( I know that moz will pick them up from netscape during installation). Will try again.

    I prefer crescendo too.

Adobe Acrobat - i had an update recently (AdobeUM) and it just popped-up. Will have to look at that. If it was supposed to be an update,
it didn't. It created its own folder and files (and another plugin).

Add/Remove? Where do you see that, in the preferences?

If i may, are all the java's needed or just the latest?

    thank you,

    Clif,

What you might try, is to rename the plugins in Netscape, and then remove the plugins in Mozilla. Might work... Then after you install the plugins, go back to Netscape and rename them to the original, i.e. Xbeatnik.dll back to beatnik.dll, etc.

There are some scripts you can add to your prefs.js to prevent Mozilla, or Netscape from copying plugins from Communicator's plugins, and if you're interested I will be glad to list them. I don't have access to them right now, but will later on this evening.

I meant Windows Add/Remove, sorry if I didn't make that clear.

According to your plugins it looks like the Sun Java Plugin 1.4.2_04. All the plugins you listed are needed.

    Ramona,

    Good idea! Will try it.
I can find the scripts i think. They must be floating around the moz sites
or places like the "Hidden Mozilla Prefs ". If i dont find the ones for this, I'll
    post back.

Ah Ha! Windows Add/Remove (vs MOZ). Been a long day, my thinking
cap must be worn out :)

Wasn't real sure i needed all the Java stuff but OK, i'll keep.

    thanks, Ramona

    Hi Clif,

This is the preference script I referenced:

Controls the scanning of the Navigator 4.x directory for plugins. When the pref is missing, the default is to pickup popular plugins such as Flash, Shockwave, Acrobat, and Quicktime. If set to true, ALL plugins will be picked up and if set to false the scan will not happen at all.

    user_pref( "plugin.scan.4xPluginFolder ", false);

Be certain to back up your prefs.js file before editing.

    Got it.

Thanks for the help (and the explanation too).

I backedup both plugin folders, Moz and Netscp then got rid of the older
ones and things are working fine now.

I'll still use the info you gave me. Don't like it when programs piggyback on
    each other.

    thanks mucho,
