I've got this really annoying provblem with my computer. Have just installed a brand new harddrive and installed win2000 prof onto it. Trying to move files from my old harddrive onto my new drive and I get a bunch of message box poping up saying "Cannot copy filename: There has been a sharing violation. The source or destionation file might be in use." If I re-try to move the file it usually works ok. I only have explorer, mirc and media player open (only using radio, the files are not in any playlist or anything). So far it has only happen with multimedia files... with mp3, mpg and avi extensions. Havnt had time to install sp2 yet...
there is no anti-virus program running....
anyway... cant think of anymore usefull info to add, so please let me know if you have any ideas

Can't immdiately think of a cause. Can suggest a work-around though.

Zip groups of files you want on your new HD and then copy or move the zip file. Unzip to a scratch directory of some sort and deal with the files from there or if you have zipped related files, just extract them to where you want them after you copy the zip file over.

This will certainly stop any issues related to the two drives.

    Ive seen this....

    This happens on my system:

    I have 2 20gig Ibm gxp drives

I have large partition on drive 1
and 2 partitions on drive 2

All partitions are NTFS (anything clicking yet?)

Did you assign yourself permissions to the second drive after the install?

If the second drive was NTFS then you need to re-assign yourself permissions to the drive before you can access it. This is because I assume a previous install on either this drive or the other one?

The sid keys are not valid for the new install so you have to reset the permissions on the second drive to renew the sid keys....

I dont think it has to do with permission. If retry to move the file(s) it might work the second or third time. It seems to me that some part of my system is using these files in some way but I cant think of what program or why it's happening.

Sharing violation appear because the file(s) I try to copy, move or use is already in us by another program. True ???

How can I troubleshoot this to find out what program is using the file(s) ? Is there some sort of program that show all files that are open and in use, and what program is using them ?

Another problem I started getting, if I select a file in explorer, explorer kills it self. This only happens to a couple of files but it's still very annoying  Any ideas ?
