I've never had a problem before, and I know this is prob a stupid question... but I'm fixing to assemble my new computer, and just want a question answered. In what instances are you supposed to use the little "fiberglass" washers ? I know the mounting studs are brass, and most places don't use the washers....if not needed , why are they there? Someone please educate me on this..... got the case almost back together <painted it black>, and gonna be doing the rest here very soon.
    TIA,

Hey Nick, Those are to help insulate the Motherboard or for shock absorbers..

It is one or the other, Motherboard will run Without them, but you are far better off using them.

On each mounting ***** going through the Motherboard attaching it to the case, place one. Can't go wrong, and usually with each case, they include a packet of screws, nuts, hardware odds and ends...

They usually ship more than sufficient of each to complete your project. and at the end of the year, you should be able to open a hardware store with what was not used...:)

I haven't used the red fiber washers for years and havent' had any problems. I think they're a throwback like the stupid plastic AT standoffs that you see for sale on the net.

The last computer I built I left off those red fiber washers and it wouldn't start up at all, no power to anything, once I put the washers on everything was fine..... I know it had to be the washers because I checked, double checked and triple checked all of the connections on everything and everything was hooked up right.

I guess what I'm saying is that it depends on the board whether you need them or not..... I suppose I was lucky I didn't do any damage to the board, so why take a chance..... use them.

On occasion the runs on a printed circuit boad go very close to the mounting holes. While some may do this so as to provide a ground to the case, many will short the board to ground.

Best bet: check around the mounting holes for board runs. If some are close enough that the scrèwhead or the mounting stud will hit them, and they don't look as though they're meant to be grounded, use the washers.

You'll know the intentional ones by the fact that the holes often penetrate the run, and it may even have a pad to assure good contact. Ground runs are also typically wider than than the others.

Glad you got your problem solved Kevin. If I needed them though, I'd be SOL because I don't get any with the case I buy these days.

    When you do use them...

Put them on as a washer...

AMny times they are not needed. Many times they are...

    Depends entirely on the MB
