    HI :)

Not a major techie question, but does anyone know how to get a monochrome desktop like the desktop in xp when you shut down.

just wondered, as i have a laptop thats dreadfully slow and want to minimise ram and chip usage, and thought that the mochrome effect would help, and not only that, it seems clear for the eye to see :)

Wouldn't think changing your LCD screen to "black & white" would have much (any?) effect on system performance.

Sounds like either the laptop is under-powered for XP (what are its CPU and RAM specs?)

Was it always slow, or has gradually become so?

Delete Temp Internet and history files. Empty all the is allowed from the temp folder in documents and settings under your (and any other) logins. Delete everything from the windows/prefetch folder. Run disk cleanup, right click the drive in my computer. Turn off the fade and animation menus.

Clean the registry. See below to a couple I use. Use the unecessary files cleaner in EasyCleaner as well, but leave the duplicate cleaner alone.

    Finally Defrag the hard drive.

There are other system performance tweaks to do with the XP interface as well, but enough for now. ;)

    *edit*
Just seen the Laptop specs in your Sig. Nothing wrong with the CPU speed, but would suggest you double your RAM. As you seem to have 240Mb of RAM, I guess you have onboard graphics that reserves 16Mb of that RAM.
Update drivers for the laptop as well, particularly the graphics. But after the mentioned system tweaks you best performance boost will be by increasing your RAM. AND STICK WITH A COLOUR SCREEN. :)
