I just formatted my hard drive as a last resort and now my monitor won't change beyond 16 color, 640 X 480.

I have the disk for this monitor (Viewsonic GS773) but it says I already have the best driver.

    Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

You need to install drivers for your video card (display adapter) . Do you have them. If not, do you know what kind of video card you have?

Thanks for responding Zander. You helped me last year with a problem too.

In device manager, display adapter, it list this: Standard PCI Graphic Adapter (VGA). And it says, "...working properly "

Yesterday, after formatting, It took me several hours to get my modem working. I think I finally got it working by removing all of the software and the physical modem itself and then reloading it and then it worked. Could this monitor driver problem require a similar removing and reloading? I'm not sure how to go about it.

    Thanks

It's not your monitor driver you need to install. It's your display adapter. In device manager it says it's a standard PCI graphic adapter because it's using one of the generic drivers that comes with windows. Either windows doesn't have the correct one or it for some reason it couldn't recognize it. If you don't know what kind of display adapter you have we would need to know what kind of computer it is and what OS you're using. Did the computer come with any discs?

The computer came with a Windows98 disk and a Driver & Manual Installation CD for SiS Chipset.

    It's a ProTek, AMD 450 processor. Windows98, IE

This is a fairly new monitor that does have the disk, but I guess the display adapter driver is independent of the monitor drivers, right?

I'll be standing by waiting for response. Thanks!

I just tried updating the display adapter driver with searching the CD ROM with the Windows 98 disk and then the other drivers disk I mentioned but both times it came up saying that the best driver is already installed.

    The problem is fixed!!!

I had to run that drivers disk that I mentioned. It wasn't enough just to try to upgrade the driver by searching CD with that disk in. I had to run the disk which downloaded all the SiS drivers.

So, by you telling me that the driver was generic, that got me on the right track.

    Thanks very much!
