My mouse is on comm1 and my modem is on comm3. Doesn't comm1 and comm3 share the same IQ request ?? It seems that my modem should be on comm2 but every time I install the modem win98SE sticks it on comm3. Is there a way I can force the modem to be on comm2 ??Do you think the modem being on comm 3 could cause a problem ??? I am having a problem again trying to get a Caller ID program to work and I am wondering if this may be a problem.

Yes, Com1 and Com3 share the same IRQ, but they have different addresses. The same for Com2 and Com4.
Some modems just insist on which port they are going to use.

In the olden days, coms 1 and 3 did share the same IRQ. If you have a hardware set modem on an old system, that is still the case; however, it is entirely a different case with PCI modems.

INn the case of PCI devices, the IRQ question does not apply. Windows assigns the IRQ and you don't get a choice. And, several PCI devices may share the same IRQ without conflict.
