Installed a 56 K modem Cirrus Logic in a COMPAQ Deskpro computer.Pentium(R) w/MMX@ 200 MHZ,integrated 387 compatible.Win 98.Windows automatically installed modem on COM 4.My Device Manager shows only COM 1 and COM 2.Could not run DIAGNOSTICS on modem. On the PORTS dialog box,COM1 and COM2 are shadowed. Then I have COM 3,4,5.How do I installe the modem on COM 1 or COM 2?

Boot to safe mode, remove the modem(s), all com ports, anything in "Other Devices" from device manager.
    Restart, go into BIOS setup.
Disable com 2, set "PnP OS Installed" to NO.
Set "Reset configuration Data" to Yes (enabled).
    Restart.
If it still has troubles, go back into Device manager, System Devices, PCI bus, Properties, IRQ steering tab. Uncheck all except "Get IRQ table using MS Spec... ".
    Restart.

    **compliments of reboot
