I installed a wireless card in IBM laptop with win 98SE. Loaded install disk with drivers. During start up windows used its own modem driver which is not compatible. Then followed the instructions below.
You can use Device Manager to cause Windows not to load drivers or allocate resources for a device. To do so, follow these steps:

    1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click the System icon.
    3. On the Device Manager tab, click the device you want, and then click Properties.
    4. On the General tab, click Disable in this hardware profile.
I was then able to choose correct driver but when system is restarted it reverts to origional problem. Can anyone help?

    Hi, welcome to the BBS,

I suppose you are trying to connect the modem using the PCMCIA slot. That will mean that you need drivers installed for the PCMCIA controller. These will be on the CD that came with the machine, or, you can go to the IBM website and register the product in the Support section and find the drivers there. Don't worry that it may be out of warranty, it does not matter how old the product is.

Before trying to install a new modem, open the Control Panel, go to the Modems section, highlight and remove any modems listed there. Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove any programs that may be there for any modem software. Reboot, then try installing the new modem again. See if there are any special drivers that may need to be installed as well (like for the wireless hardware).

Check that the laptop meets the specifications for the modem (CPU size, amount of RAM, etc).

Can you give more details about the model of the laptop and the modem?

    Matt

bigrig--When you were at the window where you Disabled the installed drivers, was there no option to Update Driver instead of Disabling? Been a while since I used Win98 so not sure.
If you do not find that option there, then right click on the modem in Device Manager|Properties|Driver tab.
I think you disabled the modem, not the driver if you were working from the General tab.
So suggest a reboot, which should allow the modem to be recognized again, go to the Driver tab mentioned and click Update. You should get a wizard to guide you through the remaining steps.
