I have a dial up connection. After I have downloaded emails I have set my system to disconnect.

It seems to disconnect however the phone-line still remains open for up to 40 seconds before the two computer icons dissapear on the task bar and dial-tone is restored.

I have checked in device manager and there is only one modem listed.

Can anyone suggest what could be wrong?. I have WIN98 SE Outlook express and Internet Explorer.

Do I need to re-install WIN98 or what??

    regards

No, don't reinstall Windows. Next time you want to disconnect, try this first and see if line releases any faster. Hit ctrl-alt-del, select RNAAPP and end task.

I responded to your PM. Here's a few additional steps. You said when selecting ctrl-alt-del and RNAAPP you got an illegal operation. That's pointing to dial up networking (DUN). In My Computer select dial up networking and delete your ISP. Then from Control Panel, add/remove programs, windows setup communications, uncheck dial up networking. First, be sure you have your Windows cd or files are in cabs. Reboot. From start, run, type inetwiz. That will reinstall DUN and setup another ISP connection. Hopefully this will fix things. If not there is a setting or 2 in IE, or a modem problem. Let us know. :)
