Missing pics

    I had maybe 100 pictures in my documents, organized in 6 or 7 files, stuff for sale Kids, cars, Amps, ECT. and when I started the PC today and went to look at my guitar file all were gone except 3 pictures and a driver file ( icon of 2 gears thats never showed up before) I looked at the rest of the files and maybe 90% of the pics are gone and in every file there is the gear icon file, 2 files were ok avatars and my icons If mad or saved, I haved done anything to the PC in the last 4 to 5 monthes. I want to upgrade the motherboard and CPU chip just because a set was given to me 2.53 GHz 533/512 from a 2.0 GHz 400. But is my hard drive loosing itd memory. or what is happening. Any help will be appriecated

    First step is to search for the pictures by extension .jpg, ,gif, .whatever and see what comes up. It's rather unlikely that they have completely disappeared of their own accord.

    Check your file association for the particular images. It sounds like it has somehow changed to something other than a graphics program.

    Right click one of those gear icon files and choose 'Open With" and then point it to your favorite graphics program.

    Have you searched for the files by extension as I suggested?

    I recommend you download AgentRansack which is a vastly superior search engine than that included in XP (I use the Pro version) and search with that.
