    Hi All,

I have new problem with my computer.
    I am running win XP.
When I boot up for the first time that day, I will not get the speaker icon in the right part of the taskbar. I also have no sound.
After I reboot every thing is o.k. also on any reboot after that it shows me the icon. At night I shut down and the next morning I am missing the icon again. Not a big problem, but an annoyance.
    Any idea what happened here?

The icon won't appear if the sound driver doesn't initialize properly. Since you also have no sound when this happens, it sounds like a driver problem.

Look for an updated driver for your sound. If you find one, uninstall the old one before installing the new.

If you can't find a new one, uninstall and reinstall your present driver.

As always, run a chkdsk, too.

A defrag wouldn't hurt. I've had drivers that were flaky about loading that I, at least, attributed to the driver files being fragmented and scattered. Might help--couldn't hurt.

And, you may afterward want to run bootvis to optimize startup files' loading. Microsoft no longer claims that bootvis will improve boot time or resume time, but I find this somewaht modest. It improved things on my system and is still a popular tool for that purpose.

    Thanks for the tip.

I uninstalled and then reinstalled the sound driver.
    I also run bootvis.

After that I did a complete shutdown including power off
And after I booted up again I had a speaker icon. Lets hope it will still be there next time I start up.

    Thanks for your help.

Q: how often should I run bootvis? Or was that just a 1 time thing?
    Thanks again
