Are you saying that the system.ini file itself is missing or does your friend get a message saying something about file referenced in the system.ini is missing? If there's an error message given, what is it? Does the computer boot to windows?

?system.ifi? Is this a typo? I am familiar with system.inf, system.ini and possibly others but not an *.ifi extension.

Can you be a bit more descriptive in the problem and quote any errors including any that may be available from a details button on the popup if this error is occurring after entering windows and getting to the desktop. If the error is before windows loads, does this stop you from entering windows? etc..

I'm just trying to make sure what file is missing. Is it system.ini or a file that is being asked for but is missing and may be listed in the system.ini?

    To Zander,
I see you've beat me to the post button. If I'd had a few more cups of coffee this morning, I may have typed faster, checked spelling and clicked on the post button a bit quicker.... :) This is kind of fitting though as poster has asked twice... :D

Hmmm. I didn't even notice the typo. Reminds me of the old thing about how you can read a sentence with all the letters mixed up in the words. :)

    Hi ruby,

Being curious and knowing other members may also be wondering, "What is an *.ifi file and how did your friend finally fix the problem "? While, I am always glad to see a happy ending to a posted problem, this one never really "got off the ground ". The "unhappy beginning" is still unknown (the details needed, where never supplied).
