    Hi Ramona,

Thank you for the tip on the pop-up stopper. Those things drive me nuts like they do most people. I haven't made 7 the default Browser yet but Dona is slowly coming around. I use it most of the time so before long I hope to switch.

I forgot to tell you the problem on the mail business was on 4x. I couldn't find anything like Attachments under view in 7x.

This may be off base and if so tell me and I'll never bring it up again. We have a problem. While we were getting our computer back on line Crescendo quit the game I guess. It appears Quick Time has replaced them.

Do you know of a single Midi file player that allows you to download files to your computer that has adjustable playback volume?

I realize this doesn't pertain to Netscape problems. But I thought it'd be worth a shot.

    Good Night, Ramona

    Oscar

    Hi Oscar,

Why don't you install Crescendo again? MHO is that the audio is superior to the other players. Before you install it, configure QuickTime... disable it as the default player for midi files. Then install Crescendo and it should kick in.

For Netscape 7 you will need Crescendo 5.1. For Communicator I'm using 5.0.0.53, if that is still available from their site. In fact I just tried the LiveUpdate site and got a time out, so they must be doing some updating. Here is the link:
    http://www.liveupdate.com/

On your View Attachments, no, there isn't an option in Netscape 7.0/01/02, but that option is available in 7.1.

Let us know if you need more help.

    Hi Ramona,

Thank you for the information on both the player and 7.1. Which I spent the biggest part of my afternoon downloading.

That call up modem sure grates on a person when downloading a large file. One hour and 30 miniutes just to download.
How long has it been since you spent that length of time downloading? I know you've done it and it's my own fault that I'm doing it. But like they say misery love company. I've been having a lot of company lately.

We've been trying that site for over a week and today is the first time we were timedout so maybe they're getting closer to getting back on line. We'll keep checking as Dona gets unhappy everytime she can't get on.

I was quite surprised after the update that the only thing I really had to do was check print to print the e-mail.
All of the bookmarks and settings were intact.

I think I'm getting a bit windy as you're running a business and don't really have time for this.

    Have a good week-end, Ramona.

    Hi Ramona,

Mission accomplished. Ican't tell you how much I appreciate your assistance.

Dona sends her thanks as well.

I'm at a lost for words so let's hope
a BIG thank you will suffice for now.

I wonder why my password didn't work . Could it be because I installed 7.1?
I wouldn't think so but there's a lot I don't under stand about these computers. Always will as I don't retain near as much as I did when I was younger.

    Thanks again, Ramona

    Hi Oscar,

You're most welcome. In the event anyone else is wondering, I sent Oscar some files - no technical issues resolved. Strictly a personal transaction...

Do you mean your password for this site? You must have it working now, or you couldn't post... Let us know.

    7.0 &7.1

    Hi Ramona,

Thank you for all the interesting information concerning Crecsendo We are unable to play it or even bring it up on 4.7 and 7.1 just sets and looks at you. We have decided to take the wait and see attitude at the moment.

Can not absorb the information on the sites mentioned although I did make a quick run through them. Will save them for a better day.

I believe I informed you I upgrade from 7.0 to 7.1. But I never gave it a thought to delete 7.0 , now I don't know if I should or not.

I imported the bookmarkers and mail from 4.7 last night and everything was working great. This pm 7.1 wouldn't remeber my password nor my profile name when I opened them up. I think I finally got that corrected. But what bugs me now is when I click on the icon in the tray to open Navigator it opens mail and newsgroup.

I think when I deleted the icon in the tray that said 7.0 it not only deleted my bookmarks in 7.1 except the ones I import from 4.7. As to it opening mail group in place of Navigator could it be that when they reloaded the computer at the shop that they set it up that way in the start up files.

Yet up until I deleted the 7.0 icon when I clicked on Navigator it went directly to it same as with the news Group. Any suggestions on changing it or whatever it'd take to correct it.

When I boot up since the shop work on it it goes directly to Communicator though it didn't before. We'd have to go through Google to open Communacator prior to that.

Would deleting 7.0 help anything or mess anything up at this point. I assumed 7.1 would install over 7.0 as it was an update so I didn't check it.

I'm probably crying wolf but I don't like mysteries such as this. Any suggestions other then go on vacation for a few months.

    Hi Oscar,

Did you check your plugins folder on 7.1 for the Crescendo plugins? That would be:
    CresObserver.class
    CresPlayer.class
    crestest.htm
    crestest.mid
    npmidi32.dll
    MP3SEQ.dll
When you installed Crescendo, did you direct it to the correct location? Sometimes those screens fly by before you realize what they contain.

For your Netscape startup problems, try this:
    Right click your Netscape Icon
    Select Properties
    Click the "Shortcut" tab
In the target line, add this command switch: -p yourusername
The target line should then look similar to this:
    "C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla\mozilla.exe" -p yourusername

That should bring up Navigator on the next startup.

Note: there is a space between the exe" and -p.

If Netscape opens with Mail & Newsgroups now, then you may need to correct your Preferences.

Go to: Edit | Preferences | Appearance
Check the settings there, and remove the checkmark beside Mail & Newsgroups, if it is enabled.

Deleting the 7.0 Icon would have absolutely no effect on your Bookmarks.

If I'm understanding correctly, you're saying that when you turn on your PC, it opens with your Dialup and then Communicator Opens? If this is so:
Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options
    Click on the "Connections" Tab
Select: "Never dial a connection "
    (depending on your OS)

This will give you control over when to dial up your Internet connection. If I'm misunderstanding your problem, let me know!

If you continue to have problems, then I would definitely do a clean install of Netscape 7.1. I have install guidelines on the Solutions site: Performing a "Clean" Install for Netscape 7.x

It would have been much better to uninstall 7.0 before installing 7.1, due to 7.1's file incompatibilities with older versions.

    Always happy to help!

    Hi Ramona,

I believe I have the problems with both Netscape 7.1 & 4.7 resolved. Rather then do a clean install on 7.1 I decided to uninstall 7.0 then if need be I could do the clean install. I lucked out as it works fine so I held off on the clean install. I'll remember it though if I start to have any problems other then the nit picking kind.

Still no luck with Crescendo. We were talking and wondering if we installed Quick Time and opened the songs with it do you think we could then use Irfan View to override Quick Time to download the song to the computer?

Why don't I try it? Because Quick Time installs around 20-25 files throughout the Registry and although I lucked out once in removing them I don't trust myself to do it twice. What I know about the Registry is slim and none. I don't mind messing with the files but nothing in the Registry.

Or you might say I'm a coward when it comes to doing anything in the Registry.

    Just a thought.

I apologize for being so slow in replying to your last posting.

    Have a great week-end.

    Regards,
    Oscar

    Hi Oscar,

    On your Crescendo problems:
    For Netscape 7.1
Open Windows Explorer and navigate to:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\plugins
    Double click the crestest.htm file
This should take you to a Crescendo test page. Do you see the Crescendo control panel? If the control panel is viewable then do this:
Right click anywhere on the control panel, and from the dropdown menu select: Volume
    Is the Volume enabled?
    Next: select Options
    Disable: Allow Auto Detach
    Enable: Allow looping
    Enable: Auto Start
    Look at: Midi Device
What is enabled or disabled ?

On QuickTime, as I have often stated, I don't allow that program on my system. Others don't seem to have a problem with the application, but I don't like the way it takes over all media preferences.

If you want to download a midi file to your HD, then all that is necessary is to right click the midi file and save it to your HD. Then you can play the file with the player of your choice. I hope that is what you're asking...

As an alternative, Beatnik will play embedded midi and wav files. However, I think Crescendo will work...
