I bought my computer 2nd hand at a computer fair, I have been told by a friend that the Windows XP professional system on it may be a pirate copy. Is it safe to download the microsoft regular updates or can microsoft harm my computer

Microsoft assumes that you may be a victim instead of a perpetuator. If your copy of XP is deemed to be unauthorized, it will refuse to allow updates and ask you to notify your vendor.

If you did purchase a computer with an authorized copy of XP from a DEALER at the computer fair, go back the next time and make such make good. If the dealer (or individual won't), contact the promoters of the fair about the situation.

If that doesn't work, contact Microsoft or the Software Business Alliance. They would love to find people who make MONEY selling pirate software.
