I install a new harddrive with WinXP. I wanted to re-update XP with the lastest updates that I had before installing the new drive. So I click Window update went to Microsoft site and followed the instructions and was able to install all the updates with no problem. I then did some other installations and had a problem so I used my system restore to correct it. That right, the restore date was before my XP updates. So I went back to Microsoftt to do it again. Well this time when I click to scan my system for updates I got an error. Something about not being able to open the page. I contacted Microsoft, but they just told me how busy they are and good luck. So all that said does anyone know if Microsoft is having a problem with their update data base? I try updating my daughter Win98 and got the same error message.

    Anyone have any thoughts?

    Update

Well thanks for the link, but I found the problem. As I said I had done a restore to a date prior to the installed updates. So I went into the register and set the CSDversion back to 0. This allow me to scan and get the latest updates.

But when I tried to install the updates it told me I needed to install SP1 first. No problem. I clicked OK and everything started, but at the end it told me that it could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. It told me to check and make sure my Cryptographic Service was running. I checked and the Service is running. Now What??? Anyone have any suggestion? I'm beginning to wonder just how much more of this I can stand.

    Updates

Thanks Charles. After I read the Dell Forum thread I started wondering, and saying what if. My what if's told me to restore my system to several weeks ago after I installed the updates for the first time. So I did it and after seeing the updates I removed them with the add & remove program. I then restore my system to the current date. Guess what, no more update problems. I am back in busy for now. I'm sure it won't last for long. My Grandson Keeps telling me. "Grandpa, why don't you just leave the computer alone. "

Thanks for the brain jump start.

    Bob
