    FYI -
A new version of Microsoft Security Essentials v2 has been released and is available for download. To maunally upgrade you must uninstall version 1 and then install the new version.

A few changes in this version:
    - installer asks if want to turn on Windows Firewall if it's off. Gives a yes-no choice too.
    - registry: hklm/software/microsoft/current version/run now says MSC (microsoft security client) instead of MSE.
    - spynet - 3rd choice: 'I do not want to join spynet ".
    - real time protection choices: monitor all files, incoming or outgoing (some integration with Windows Firewall)

    TonyT,

Thanks for the "heads up ". I have migrated my computers from AVG free to MSE/C - mainly because I didn't like the new AVG PC Analyzer that offers to do something free and then wants you to pay to get the software that will fix the problems it finds. Good to know that Version 1 must be uninstalled prior to installing Version 2.

Thanks for letting us know TonyT. I'm surprised there was no notification from microsoft, if I hadn't read this thread I would have been none the wiser.

However if you go to the URL posted and select Run as opposed to Save the existing software is Upgraded.

Thanks for that Pete but I've already done the upgrade by uninstalling version 1 first, it didn't take long:). With that info others may avoid the problem.

Go direct to MS and select your OS - it is compatible with XP - I just installed it on XP SP3

I said that you must uninstall the old version first. I based that on what someone else told me. It's not true. I saved the downlaod to a dir and then executed it and it upgraded just fine. But on Windows 7 if forced a restart when it was done, but not on XP.

Yep, my experience as well. No need to uninstall the old version but a restart is required with Win 7 64bit.
