I'm having a weird problem. I have Windows XP Professional and I was just told by my son that he can't open any pictures on his desktop. I'm not sure when this problem started but he gets the following error message:

    Microsoft Photo Editor:

No file format information can be found in the Registry.

When I go to my desktop I can see them with no problem.

Any suggestions as to what I can do to correct this problem?

    Thanks.

A quick solution Anne may be to use system restore to role back the system registry. If it has only recently happened, say in the last few days, then pick a restore point closest to before the problem occurred and role back. Any windows updates or programme installs since the chosen restore point will need to be installed again. I'd suggest uninstalling a programme before using system restore to roll back, if a programme was installed after the problem occurred. This will stop the annoying feature of system restore, in creating two program fiiles entries for a programme that was installed after a restore point and then had to be reinstalled again after the system was rolled back. I.E C:\Program Files\InterVideo, and then C:\Program Files\InterVideo(2)

HTH (if i haven't caused massive confusion?) :D

    Hi Paul,

Thanks for your reply. I'm really not sure when this problem started as I normally do not go on my sons desktop and mine has been working great.

I would prefer not to mess with the system restore as I'm not sure when it started and at what point I should restore back to.

Is there any other way to see why it works on one desktop and not on another?

    Thanks.

It sound exactly like my problem. I'm at work at the moment but will try it when I get home and post and let you know but I'm pretty sure that you've hit the nail on it's head.

    Thank you.

    More Photo Editor problems

    Hi all,

I used to have a problem with Photo Editor with Win 2000 and now it is haunting me again in the XP.

It works fine for some weeks and, for an unknown reason it just stops opening. As I double click a .JPG or .GIF the sw seems to open, the program appears on the task bar, but it is really not there. Clicking it is useless, nothing happens at all. I can just right click the task to close it.

The program is shown in the task manager as "running ", but there is no window for it. I tried reinstalling it, works for some time and then becomes "catatonic" again. It seems that some other application prevents PhEd to run properly.

Have some of you guys experienced something like this ?

    Thanks

    Billy
