I now have XP Prof. and still am using Netscape 4.8 along with Messenger e-mail. Whe I go to site where one should be able to click on an e-mail address and have the e-mail client pop up that no longer happens. What setting should I make in order for the e-mail to respond as previously? Thanks.

    Hi Pete,

When you installed Communicator, did you make it the default browser? It has been so long since I used Communicator, but I believe it asks during the install.

If you did, and the mailto: still doesn't work, then what you can do is this:

    Close Netscape
    Back up your Users folder
Open the prefs.js file using Notepad
    Find this script:
    user_pref( "browser.wfe.ignore_def_check ", true);

    Change true to false

Start Netscape, and it should prompt you to register Netscape as your default browser.

    Check your mailto: here:
    Open Windows Explorer
Click on View | Folder Options | File Types
    Scroll down to URL:MailTo Protocol
    Does it point to Netscape?

Now that you are using XP, you might want to consider giving Mozilla 1.6 a try. You can run Mozilla and Communicator with no problems.

Let us know if you continue to have problems.

Thanks, Ramona. It works when I'm surfing with Netscape. I also have IE vs 6, and when I used to surf with that browser it also took me to my messenger e-mail whenever there was an accessible e-mail address; it doesn't since I have XP Prof. Maybe there's no connection, I don't know.

Maybe I should try Mozilla. I should read up on it. I'm wondering whether I would be able to import my e-mail "in" and "sent" as well as addresses and bookmarks into Mozilla??

    Thanks again, Ramona.

    Hi Pete,

In the Add/Remove Programs, there is a setting for:
    Choose a Default Web Browser
    Choose a Default e-mail program

Check to see that you have Netscape selected for both these Preferences. That should open any mailto: link in Netscape Messenger.

When you install Mozilla 1.6, your Netscape Communicator Users data will be automatically converted. The Mail & Newsgroups component in Mozilla 1.6 is very stable.

Let us know if you have further questions.
