I have Windows Media Player 6.4 with some downloaded codecs. When I open a movie in .avi format to watch, it gives me this message.

"Unable to download an appropriate compressor. (Error=80040200)

I have sound because I can hear the movie....but no video.

I checked all formats under options and they are all checked. Still, no video.

    Any advice?

(by the way, it was working fine before I had to reformat my computer and reinstall Win98se.)

There are so many different avi formats now that you almost always need a new codec from time to time. MS does not have codecs for download for many media types that will play in Media Player.

You can install one of the many codec packs available, or get GSpot Appliance to see what codecs a particular file uses, whether it is installed on your machine, and whether the file can be rendered using it. Then you can make an intelligent search for the codec you need.

It worked. Thanks. It was the DIVX codec.
