    I'm using Windows 98se ....
I was only using Norton, and then recently took MSN8 ......
    Now I have both Norton and McAfee (McAfee came as a part of MSN8) . . . . . .
The "authorities" sitting at the bar, claim that McAfee and Norton are NOT good room-mates !! I would appreciate your ideas / opinions about having both of them on !!
Is it possible to get rid of McAfee, without getting rid of MSN8 ??

    Hello Pappy,

Bad idea to have two AVes running at the same time, especially these two. You should pick one or the other.

After using the Add/Remove, be warned, both will leave peices of themselves behind in the registry and files as well. Use RegCleaner http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/index.php
or another cleaner to sweep the registry and manually remove files associated with them. I know Norton has a removal tool on their web site and McAffee may have one as well.

Have a question about MSN8. I have been "urged" to update from MSN7. Was the McAffee install a seperate option? Could you have refused it?

Your post gives me another reason not to upgrade to MSN8.

    Regards - Charles

    I have a somewhat unusual situation ... I'm in a "two-for" pkg !!
I'm signed up with MSN for both WEBTV (which I choose to call "SOBTV" ) and pc for $21.95 ! ! !
They sent me the MSN 8 CD to download ! It does offer some maneuverablity with pic's etc, in E-mail ! ! ! HOWEVER, McAfee iis apparently "buried" somewhere in that download !! PREVIOUSLY, with MSN I was able to isolate McAfee and send it to the Garbage can . . . . . and Norton worked fine !! Since downloading MSN8, I don't see "McAfee" anywhere in the Profile / wherever !! As I said earlier, the "authorities" , sitting at the bar, claim the two, together are not compatible . . . . . . I'm beginning to believe thats true !!!! (They may even be contributing to some of my problems !! ) I seem to have had much better reaction / behavior with my pc, using Norton, exclusively !!
Site you sent looks like an "interesting challenge" for this "beginner" !! :)

After l-e-n-g-t-h-y chat session with MSN Support, and phone conversation with MSN Tech Spt, I have learned that McAfee is integrated in the MSN 8 E mail Program ... It CANNOT be identified and isolated for uninstall separately !!
    With their assist, I did uninstall MSN 8 , and installed MSN 7 (Explorer) . . . . . so far so good !! ( It does NOT contain McAfee !! )

    Hi Pappy,

Thankyou for posting back about the McAfee issue, never came across that bit of info about MSN8. Now I KNOW that I won't use MSN8.

Did you try the registry cleaner from jv.org? His jvPowerTools is a very good and POWERFUL registry tool to be used with caution. Using it will give you a great deal of knowlege about the registy and what it contains and the way its structured.

    Regards - Charles

McAfee seems better than Norton's, it found virus on my system that Norton missed. They both leave many files behind!! I recently started a thread in WIN98, "cleaning the registery" that has great info on getting all files out- should be helpful for you to get your system back to normal. See if you can get FIXIT 4.0 for cleaning the registery- it is suuperior to most cleaners. It found several hundred files on my system which I inspected and auto deleted in a jiff. Good Luck
