My opinion, don't get a "portable" type that runs off a second USB port. Get one with it's own power supply.

Look at what the "One Touch" software does. If you are not going to use it, could you get another drive and save the difference. If you use the One Touch software and it has security systems, if it malfunctioned, could you get "locked out of your own drive "?

If you don't need a "pre-made" external drive, investigate getting an external drive case, and getting a your own HDD to put in it. Some have USB and E-SATA connectors, E-SATA runs at the same speed as an internal SATA drive.

I have 3 or 4 external USB drives, at least a couple of which are Maxtor. I have never used the software and I always reformat them NTFS. I have been using Paragon Drive Backup Personal, but I now see that Paragon has a free version as well. My advice is to always try any software before buying it. And with backup software always try the restore as well or risk having a backup that turns out to be write only data. The best way to test a restore is to have a second internal drive available that you can swap in so you do not have to risk destroying your live system.

I recently read a review of a 500GB Maxtor here: Bob Atkins
