Laptop with XP will not recognize mass storage device. It will recognize wireless mouse, etc., but not card readers or jump drives. Popup appears to install and will fail. I tried loading Win 2000 drivers and was flagged that the OS does not need drivers. :(

Have you tried running the Add New Hardware wizard in Control Panel?

Check at the laptop manufacturer's website for updated drivers for the chipset and/or the USB controller (if not, rerun the drivers disk that came with the laptop).

Yes, I tried that and it wants an install disk. The only thing I have for the laptop is Restore disks from Toshiba. I really was trying to avoid a full restore.

What does it say in Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers > USB Mass Storage Device > Properties > General tab? In the "Device Status" window, does it say "This device is working properly. "?

    Hello mojo13,

It might be the power supply, in that case you need an external powered hub.

    Regards - Charles

A Toshiba Authorized Repair center replaced the system board and checked the USB ports - they said it was fixed but when I tried to put a thumb drive in it I got the same results. Same with the card reader. I called them and they said it must be a software problem

I've only had a brief encounter with a Toshiba laptop.

Search the restore disk for a drivers folder or check on the C: drive. There should be a way to reinstall drivers (try a search for "usb ").

Check at the Toshiba website for FAQs regarding USB.

Post back with the model number.
