Is there any way to hide the subfolders in Communicator 4.78? I have certain mail folders that I would like to create subfolders of. For instance, a Brother folder in my Family Emails folder. Is there a way to get the Brother folder to not show when you open Communicator? Not sure if I'm explaining this clearly. I would like to have it similiar to when you explore a hard drive. The list of contents with the "+" next to the ones with more inside. I would like to have that "+" next to my mail folders that have subfolders. That way, not every folder is visible. Is that even possible? Hopefully, that's clear as mud. :)

Mike, is this what you're after:

I have two subfolders under the Family folder, and I think that's what you're asking. They are obviously hidden.

    Hi Ramona!

That's exactly what I'm looking for. Right now, I can see all those subfolders. It makes for quite a long list.

    Mike,

When you set up the subfolder, ensure that you change the field for "Create as new subfolder for ". Instead of "Local Folder" it would be "Family ". Is that what you've done?

Yes, I did make sure the folder was changed to Family. With the email program open, I go to Communicator, Tools, then Message Center; the folders show up as hidden with the "+ ". But in the drop down menu at the top left, all the folders show no matter if they are main folders or subfolders.

A drop down Menu in the Message Center? I'm not sure what you're talking about here, Mike. Sorry to be dense!

    Ramona,

Sorry about the confusion. The drop down menu is the one on the main screen, not in the Message Center. I guess I jumped around without warning you.

Thanks Mike for clarifying. I was pretty sure that was what you meant, but it has been so long since I used Communicator's Messenger, I drew a blank.

You should see the + next to any folder which contains subfolders in your Local Folders window. Have you tried deleting your SNM files for the Family folder?

Close Communicator, and delete the SNM file for Family folder, then open the Family.sbd folder, and delete any SNM files you see there.

If still no joy, then move the Mail in the Family folder to a temporary folder, close Communicator, and delete the Family folder and Family.sbd folder. Create the folder again and see what happens.

    Hi Ramona,

No luck. I did what you suggested and it didn't help, sorry to say. Anything else to try? Thanks!

    Mike,

Something is haywire with your Local Mail. Try rebuilding the Mail Folder:

FIRST: Back up/make a copy of your Users Folder!
    1. Close Communicator.
    2. Go to your User directory. (C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\username.)
    3. Once there, rename the Mail folder to Oldmail.
    4. In the same folder: (C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\) create a new folder named "Mail "
New | Folder, from the Windows Explorer File menu (or right clicking on the background and choosing:
New | Folder from the context menu).
    5. Restart Communicator.
    6. Check to make sure that this new folder is working by sending yourself a message. Once you've determined that it's O.K., you should then shut down Netscape, go to the Oldmail folder, and copy any of the mail folders you wish to keep (ie. Inbox, Sent) into your new mail folder. Make sure to copy only the Inbox, Sent, etc. files, and NOT the .snm files, same applies to SBD folders.

    Ramona,

Unfortunately, that didn't help either. I guess I will have to go with the new profile to see if that helps. It will be a few days before I can get to it, but I will get back with the results. Thanks for the continued help!

    Hi Ramona,

No luck with the new profile either. Is it possible that my 4.78 version won't do that? Not a big deal. Just thought it would be nice to separate them without having a hugh list of folders. Thanks for trying!

    Mike,

I still have 4.79 installed, and that's where the screen shots were from. I would think that 4.78 would be the same, as there were very few changes in those two versions.

Why don't you give Thunderbird a try?

    Ramona,

I am playing around with Thunderbird, but I haven't made the switch yet. TB doesn't seem much different then what I have, so I haven't been in a hurry to switch. It's a comfort thing I guess. :D Since you mention TB, I see that multiple profiles are all visible. Is there a way to have it set up like Netscape where you pick a profile before opening the program? I did some quick looking earlier, but didn't see anything. Haven't been able to do a lot of looking yet.

I have two profiles for Thunderbird, but I will do anything but having to pick a profile, so I use Ramona's website profile bypass trick . But, I don't see why one should have multiple profiles, and having to pick them the hard way. If you want to create new profiles, just extend, temporarily the path to include -p

    Mike,

Yes, you can have a separate Desktop shortcut for each Profile, with the -p profile name command line switch. Otherwise the Profile Manager will open first, and allow you to choose the Profile.

    Mike,

One more thing for you to try:

Create a new folder, with two new subfolders, then move the mail from those subfolders which won't collapse, to the new subfolders.

See if the new folder will expand AND collapse.

    Westside,

I just like having my email so everyone can't look at it so easily. Sometimes, like for emails about surprise gifts, I don't want that so available to others.

    Ramona,

I tried your suggestion. I named the subfolders #1 and #2 then transferred a couple messages into each. They didn't collapse so I closed Communicator and reopened. The two subfolders were gone as were the emails. Good thing they were emails I didn't need. Maybe the subfolder names were not acceptable, no warning about that though. So I came up with two other names, first and second. Still no luck. Oh well. Thanks for your efforts. As always, much appreciated.

    Mike
