I have just used Norton Anti-Virus to detect infected files on my computer. These were 'un-deleteable'. Norton gave the path to each of these files on my computer. The path included Local Settings, but I am unable to find 'Local Settings' on my computer. I did a search for it but found nothing.

I don't see why this would have been deleted, and yesterday I reinstalled both Windows XP (and Internet Explorer).

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Local settings should be at C:\documents and settings\username

Usually the infections Norton will find and not be able to delete are files that are compressed and possibly in with other compressed files.

They are harmless when compressed since the virus can't be active and if the file is uncompressed, Norton will notice and can then deal with it.

But the message that you are infected isn't pleasant. The only good solution is to locate the file or compression wrapper that contains the file and delete that.

C:\documents and settings\username does not contain my Local Settings file. This is where I'm lost.

Because NOrton states that the infected files are in this location, it is confusing to me, because I simply cannot find this folder. Also, within Norton, the files fail to delete after I request to do so. That is probably because it can't find the folder either??

Thanks for the replies so far...

On the toolbar select tools>folder options>view, scroll down and check show hidden files then OK to close. You should find it now.

I would also delete any restore points, reboot, and then create a new SR point, just to be on the cautious side. That way you won't accidentally "restore" your infection.
