Would I be able to use a program like FileScavenger to recover lost NetScape emails, and if so what would be the fille extensions that I would need to search.
Also, where should they be placed once found and recovered?

Are the e-mails lost, or you just can't get them? Look at Ramona's Netscape solutions for this link http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns7profloc.html
When you find the profile (as you can see the locations vary with the operating system), look inside:: xxxx.slt|mail|mail account. Your mail is in the Inbox.
Now, you realize that you will have to give us some details about your problem.

The emails don't apppear in the inbox.
The old (7.1) NetScape crapped out.
I did a new install of 7.2. Did not uninstall or delete any of the 7.1 files.
I'm doing this on someone else's system (windows home ed.) so I'm not sure and neither are they, of exactly what happened to the emails.
They would like to salvage whatever can be salvaged.
I have FileScavenger which works well with recovering deleted files, but I need to know what I'm looking for in order to do so. I have zero experience with NetScape email.
Any further help would be greatly appreciated and would be entered into your permanent record in a favorable manner.

    thanx everyone!

Are you saying that the mail is not in the Inbox file, on the hard drive? The only way to read it is to right click|open with Wordpad. Now, if you are referring to the Inbox which you access in Netscape, it is an entirely different thing. You should find pairs of files on the hard drive, e.g. Inbox and Inbox.msf. The file with the .msf extention can become corrupted, and will not show anything in Netscape Mail. If you delete the .msf file with Netscape open, a new one will be formed, which hopefully will give you what you want. So, delete Inbox.msf in windows Explorer, then close Windows Explorer, and open Netscape Mail.
The Inbox file contains all your mail in an UNIX format.
I am assuming that everything was done correctly and that the mail could be seen prior to this. By the way the old NS7.1 should have been removed first.
But, the profile should not be affected. See if the path to your account in NS matches the path which you see on the hard drive.

ok, got it. by not uninstalling ver 7.1 and installing ver 7.2 over it, NS created a second pop3 directory for the new mail (pop.xxx.net-2).
the original pop.xxx.net remained and I was able to read and save all
emails received using the prior version.
mission accomplished, heading back to base, thanks humans!

You seem to have the same problem as the one I just replied to: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=34134
Interesting, but a nuisance. I kept 7.1, and created a separate profile for 7.2, so I did not have the problem.
I discourage installing on top. I wish that Netscape would remove old files from the program, as other programs do, and, keep its paws off the profile.
