I seem to have lost the dialog box that displays and allows me to enter a new address in IE 6. There is the word "address" at the right edge of the 4th line but no address shows.

I've tried right click and the address bar is checked.

Have you tried "dragging" it to expand it?

tenbob--As Steve R Jones has said dragging should help. Do you see four vertical dots to the left of the word "Address "? That is what you drag, to the left.
If that does not work are there any other functions on the same line? Perhaps they are not leaving room for the Address entry line. In that case, "fish" right under Address and when you see a double headed arrow, drag down.
