My computer halts when it gets to the Windows XP screen and no desktop icons or task bar loads (so I can't shut it down). I tried opening in safe mode but the same thing happens. No new installations have taken place. Thoughts?

I think the Explorer.exe process has either been stopped or corrupted.

Try this, press and hold down Ctrl + Alt and then press Del to bring up Task Manager, then File, New Task and type in explorer.exe to restart the process.

    Still hung up

I have tried control--alt--delete (to try to shut down, among other things) and there is no response. Other thoughts?

As you cannot boot past the Welcome screen a Repair of XP may be your only option.

    Fixed

I repaired Windows--a several hour process--and it worked!

Good news :) , but puzzled that it took several hours unless you needed to reinstall some software, drivers, etc?

FWI - when I need to format my C: drive it usually takes 3/4 days of feeding CD's into the beast, remembering and reloading tweaks, applets and getting the settings right again. Count yourself lucky :D

Thanks for posting back on this.

    Now problems with software

I reinstalled XP and got my active desktop back but...now I'm having several other problems.

I'm getting a "hp wireless mgr module has encountered a problem" error message.

WordPerfect won't load and I'm getting a "corel executable" error.

Nortons 2003 won't update and stops. The auto protection is turned off because of the failure to update. I also can't uninstall as it stops.

    Help!

    problems

I found the same info you did on the msg module and when clicking it off, it turned off my wireless task bar icon and since it brings up the 'did you mean to not have a normal' start up window every time.

    Corel won't load at all.

And I also followed all the instructions NAV 2003 but none worked.

Then decided I'd spent enough time so I tried to quick restore but the NAV problem is blocking the CD drive from being read.

So when all else fail (6 hours later), give the thing to the computer guy who will have to manually (line by line) remove NAV, which I had to do once before on another computer with Norton's firewall.

I have had good luck in the past using Symclean.exe to remove stubborn Norton installs.
