Having problems keeping my connection to giganews. when connection breaks get socket error message 10052 force closure from remote server. Have checked with Earthlink and Giganews support and have gone thru the drill with both, but problem is still occuring. I just started using new desktop with Win 8.1 and installed a new modem and re-configured my router with Earthlink Linksys help. The problem started around the time of the Win update KB3000850, but, I believe(not sure) that the problem started before this. Saw in google that the problem could be the router. Have done ping and trace to giganews site and sometimes lose packets which could trigger the disconnect. I am confused as Earthlink support said the problem could be with microsoft??? Any one out there have similar problems losing connections to remote servers???

Are you talking about this-> http://www.giganews.com/

If it's the only site where you have an issue with, it's generally very safe to say the issue is on their end..

When you get disconnected - were you very active on the site...or did you leave the pc for a "period" of time?

Thanks for the reply. I am assuming it is only giganews. I think it only happens when I am away from the computer and it is the only thing downloading while I am away. Is there a way to determine if I am losing my connection otherwise? I will keep the news server open while I am using the web and see if it happens then. So far it appears to only happen when I am away from the computer. I have sleep turned off on my computer. It does run sometimes for up to an hour especially in the evening.

Thanks for the posts. Giganews is trying to help, but, I get the usual run around. Giganews says it might be Earthlinks problem, Earthlink says it might be Giganews's problem or Microsofts problem. I think it might be my router or modem or both, or giganews's problem. Today when I lost my connection to giganews, I also lost my connection to Earthlink Web Mail, but, the lost to both was for only a few seconds. Earthlink say they are having no problems and they ran a line test(I get Earthlink thru AT&T) everything was fine. When I run a speed test I get 3.03 mbs which is what I am paying for.

Giganews suggested that I change my port and gave me a connection number to use instead of news.giganews.com and suggested that I try changing my news reader(have been using for years). The problem seems to have gone away most of the time. I really believe that there was a problem on their end as I am using same modem and router and news reader.
