Is there a way to lock a folder (on a snap server) while you are working on it. I am looking for a software that can run both mac and pc that could warn a user that someone else on the network is using that folder if the first user "locks or marks it in some way.

I think your question will get more expert attention in the Networking forum and have moved it to there.

I downloaded a software package a long time ago that monitored a specified folder for changes and would notify me if someone added a file. I can't find it anymore but i see that feature added into the mac os. I was looking if windows or an addin might offer that type of feature? a google search had a ton of network monitoring software but I don't want all the screen capture and general network use options. That is why I thought the software forum may have been the appropiate spot. But thats for your help.

This is a tough one. Proper approach would be integrated software at a network level / usage. This type of software manages access to file(s) and safeguards proper multi-user update activity. A possible solution is to create child (many to one) / parent file relationship then using a "Synchronization" backup approach. Yeah, sounds messy to me. Hopefully there is an add on program that can control file access to "one user access per update ". Understand, one user sitting on this file can deny access to to the entire network. Minimal problem in a small, one room network. Disastrous if large WAN.
