I am currently a Linux admin who is about to deploy a MS SBS03 box for AD and exchange in my network. I am used to the Linux side of logging and all that it logs, etc. My question is what does Windows log by default? Where can I find those logs, such as logs showing who transferred what to what share, and when, etc? Exchange logs? How do I view them in real time? How can i make logs to monitor other services, etc?

    Thanks for the help..!

If all the parts and pieces are installed, click on start->run->eventvwr.msc and get a feel for what is loaded into your event logs and what is being written there.

Once you get a feel for what you have and what you still need, you can post back with more info and hopefully we can give you some answers.

Good info in the event viewer. How can i watch the Exchange messaging logs in real time? Same with the IIS logs?

Is there anything out there that will email me when it finds severe or critical errors in all the logs?

There are a ton of 3rd party 'event log watcher' apps.

We use NetIQ App Manager which allows setting triggers on events and on a number of application performance criteria. Email or pager or both when a threshold is crossed. However, it is a little pricy unless you have a fairly large network.

Google search for 'event log monitoring' will give you lots of options with all sorts of feature sets and prices.
