edit note: this was split from "limited or no connectivity fix" Bug Fix Here - Newt

I tried your fix and had no success!!
For some reason I still get the same thing ... looking at the IP for the local area connection and I get a 169.254.x.x, and I can't renew the IP.

I have SP2 installed. I use DSL. I have internet access. I know I can hide the icon but I am also trying to install a Router (smc7004vbr) and when I hook up the router I get "network cable unplugged" and I believe it is b/c of the IP address

In the "read me" instructions you get us to run the Hotfix and the reg file. When I ran the hotfix it installed the hotfix but I have SP2 installed??

"Microsoft Windows XP SP2 Hotfix Q884020 (The installer will tell you if the patch isn’t applicable to your version of XP) "

    Any ideas??
    THKS MUCH

Hi New at this and welcome to the forum.

If I am reading your post correctly, you do fine with the PC connected directly to the DSL modem but if you put a router in, the PC won't connect.

First thing to check is the cable you use to connect PC to router/switch. If you are connecting to a regular switch port on the router/switch you need a straight cable (make sure the wires run to the same pin at both ends of the cable) and that the router<=>DSL modem used either straight or crossover depending on what the setup instructions call for. I've seen different devices that use both sorts.

If the cable is correct, I'd next try setting the IP address values on the PC manually. Figure out which address range the router uses (normally either 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 will be the router address) and then use another address in the same range so 192.168.0.x or 192.168.1.x and use the router's address as your gateway.

    Hi Newt,

Thks for the info. For some reason I could not get past the 169.254.x.x ip address. The cable I was using from dsl to router was straight and from router to system was crossed and I would receive the network cable unplugged (SP2) changed the cables around and still had the same problem.
I ended up removing SP2 from my system. I was able to get a regular IP 168.192.x.x
Router is now installed and working fine.
Should I attempt to install SP2 again or do you figure I would run into the same problem??

    Thks again.

After quite a bit of searching a week or so ago because I was having the same connectivity problem (and error message), I found this page. I downloaded the reg file linked to about 3/4 of the way down the page under the "Fix Download links" and ran it.

I waited a week to see if there were any problems. There haven't been and, even better, I haven't gotten the connectivity message since.

That does sound like the problem and the fix.

Miz - how far did you have to search? Dez posted a link in this section. I just pinned it.

I'm pretty sure I reached the end of the internet several times before I found that page. ;)

Naturally, either the day I found it or the day after, Dez's post with a link to that page was here.
