    Where does Windows (98SE) keep the record of when error checking, backup, and defrag were last done?

    I have a spare machine I use as a test bed for installing new or possibly suspect software etc. Sometimes I restore earlier copies of the Windows folder when things go bad, then the "last use" dates for the C: drive utilities are wrong. I'd like to be able to change them.

    :D If nit picking, I've just got to add....

    This message is meant as a reminder that it may be time to do these tasks if you haven't done them in awhile.

    Technically, by changing the folder and contents, you have not scandisked or defraged recently. Things may have changed with the replacements, such as freespace, time date stamps etc, files are not optimized as a whole, and a backup of the drive in it's current state has not been done.

    Just my thought, while passing through. This was a hmmmmmmer, so I hmmmmmed.

    Disreguard if incorrect dates are set for a more recent time than you wished. In that case, this may be a peeve [yours] and worth nit pickin'.

    goddez1,

    What I'm doing is
    a) trying to learn something, and
    b) nitpicking.

    I use a Windows backup method I saw posted on this board a few years ago, before the "big board crash ". It involves making a copy of the whole Windows folder. If Windows later goes wonky, I can boot into DOS, replace the folder, and I'm back to the earlier date.

    But I don't quite understand what you said. Here's a hypothetical for-instance:

    Let's say I do a scandisk & defrag in January. Sometime later, I start trying things that I know are dangerous. It's a spare machine after all, and if I mess it up - no big deal. So it goes OK - I keep going- and maybe in March I do another scandisk & defrag. Continuing on - eventually I restore the January backup.

    Windows now says my last scandisk was in January, but it's not. It's March. Possibly changing the registry value would leave other things hanging, but at least it's a part of the puzzle.

    broni,

    Thanks for the link. That ought to keep me busy for a while. LOL

    It's about editing "scanreg.ini "
    Value of 5 backups is Windows' default. Yoy can custimze that value up to 99.
    Open "scanreg.ini" located in Windows directory, find an entry:
    MaxBackupCopies=
    change the number from 5 to whatever you wish (up to 99), go File>Save, and you are done.
    More info HERE

    Hi Samson,

    I was not criticizing by the phrase "nit-picking ". This post was written in good humor and as a way to pass some idle time. As a fellow "nit-picker" I would be the person living in the glass house throwing rocks.

    I merely meant to point out that "literally" the harddisk [files and folders(c:\windows plus c:\*)] that you have scanned, defragged and backedup in January are not the same files and folders as they will be in March. By replacing Marches c:\windows with January's backup you have changed the hardrives files and possibly folders. These will need to be scanned, defragged and backed-up again to be assured that any current new problems or inaccuracies are repaired and files and folders are defragged optimally.

    Merely changing the date of Harddrive scanned in January, to reflect a March scan, does not mean it was scanned in March. Granted, your c:\* plus March=c:\windows files and folders were done in March but March's=c:\* plus January's=c:\windows are and were not. A date change does not make it so....

    ========
    As my eye's are crossing and I have thoroughly confused myself, let alone, anyone else who may have tried to follow this explanation, I shall close this thread with the phrase, "It may not be the best, fastest or most efficient way but it is "Your Way" ". This is more important. It's your computer and you must please yourself.

    ====Idle Hands = Idle Minds==:confused:==What was I thinking====
