My daughters system is a couple years old now and currently running W2K, she wants to
install XP and a new SATA drive also.
Doing the upgrade tp Xp is no real problem I think (i found her old Win98 sys cd). What i'm
    planning to do is :
    a. Install the SATA HD
    b. Disconnect the power from the 2 old HD's.
    c. Install XP
    d. Power up the old C drive and hope XP will assign a new drive letter (D) to it.
    e. Repeat for her second (old) HD and hope for it to be assigned as "E ".
    f. After getting some data from the old to new drive, reformat the old drives and i should be
    set to go.

I realize i will have to re-install most of the programs but the data, etc can just be copied
    over to the new drive.

Anyone see any problems with the above plan?

    thank you,
    savagcl

For that to happen, You must change the drive letters for the optical drives towards the far and of the alphabet. My CD-R/RW is X: and my DVD-ROM is Y:. You do that in Disk Management.

    If You don't change those drive letters, the added harddisks will get in after the opticals, e.g. C: = SATA, D: = CD-R/RW, E: = DVD-ROM, F: = old C: , G: = old D:.
