    Hi people,

I will be travelling abroad and "may" need to access some financial institution websites at certain placing from internet cafes. My concern is that some of the computers may have keyloggers/key stroke software installed, which would record my passwords & leave me open to being hacked.

My question is, is there anyway I can detect, or run something on theres PC that will show up if they do have any of these types of spy software installed????

    Many thanks in advance.

Maco88--I have no idea, but you have nothing to lose by trying. Download one of those programs to a flash drive and try to install (or run from the flash drive). If successful, you should be able to determine whether keyloggers, etc. are in use. If so, you may or may not be able to uninstall the spyware. But at least you would know.

I will be traveling abroad and "may" need to access some financial institution ..

Not knowing what form or type of information you need when you "access some financial institution ", but possible some of it could be provided using a ATM type machine. Most ATM machines provide access to ALL of your accounts within that bank. Any breach in this connection, you are covered.

    Another suggestion
Following suggestion does NOT use a computer. Not convenient, may incur cost.
Call / contact all financial institutions you may need to contact before you leave. Explain your concerns in determining if Internet cafe computer(s) are secure. Ask if they could provide one or two "staff employees" to managed your voice call in inquiries to them. You and staff person can decide what type of information / passwords must be verbally provided before she verbally releases the information over the phone. I would not use cell phones, or VOIP phone service to place these calls.

I would advise having someone in your family take care of any bills and such. You could open an account for them to use for this purpose. The following tips are for students traveling abroad and make sense for anyone traveling.

    Tips for Study Abroad

    Financial Advice

Open an account with HSBC since they are one of the biggest banks worldwide. You're more likely to find an HSBC branch in your travels than any others.

Be aware of exchange rates when traveling. Don't get ripped off. Look for the exchange places that don't charge a fee.

Traveler's Checks may seem a little outdated but they're useful for emergencies; have a few on hand just in case.

If you're going to bring a credit/debit card bring one that can be used as a VISA card; it is the most widely accepted.

Money belts can be a pain but they keep all your money and important documents safe and out of view.

As of now there are 12 countries using the Euro, which cuts out the need for exchanges for the traveler. For more information go to the Euro website: http://europa.eu.int/euro/html/entry.html

    Thanks guys,

its more to do with accessing info via emails, & accessing my stockmarket account, I just don't want to risk my account being violated. As I said, i'll be doing my best to avoid this but there is a chance i would have to.
Having said that I am taking steps to minimised the risks by looking for alternative.
