Windows Vista KB931712....... Need some help

Hi all, I need some help, and reinstalling vista is NOT an option.

ok, so according to my windows update log the last time windows successfully dl'd updates was the 24/08 and since then nothing. it wont even check for updates it jus hangs on the checking for updates and doesn't do anything. eventually it just times out and goes back to the check for updates button.

the reason for me posting the ms article KB931712 no, is because i also have the problem of the windows features box been blank. the article does give a solution, but the solution is only good if the specific reg key is there in the first place!

I have read the sticky about not using ms update but my vista is still labeled as authentic. I haven't had a prb with that. The prb has been caused by the new v7 of the update software but I can't uninstall it due to a slight system restore issue. in other words......... HELP!

OK, one last thing that might or might not help is a portion of the log from the last time is successfully updated to present.............

The code i've made bold is an error code that is also on the ms article i mentioned at the beginning.


Please help, im starting to go a little mad with this one!

In a way i wish I had, but every time i go to check for updates i get 80073712

 

ok, ive tried that to no avail. so i have decided to do a clean install after much painful thought of pro's & cons. god i hate doing fresh installs, its much worse now with vista than xp, i mean you cant just install over the top and leave evrything intact. bloody ms making all our lives more difficult.

anyway its working fine now.

I am just in the process of backing up now with acronis TI because i am certain its one of the recent windows updates that has caused it..... namely v7 of the update software.

i have been doing some digging around the net and found loads of posts where people have had the same issue. and then ms have had the cheek to say its not there fault! no wonder people dont trust them.

anyway, if i can pinpoint it to a specific windows update, i will repost here and you, been an MVP could raise the issue with ms. i'm sure im not the only one on this forum who have had this issue. thanks for your help.
