I just installed XP on a friends computer. i didnt a (i think this is the right term) hard install ??? by deleting the old partion, creating new, and formating to NTFS. i reinstalled all their other programs like the logitech mouse, printer, digital camera driver, and what not. we resetup their dialup internet connection and can get online very easily.

here is the problem, for some reason, only since the XP install, the computer keeps booting off the internet. it isnt after a certaint amount of time, just whenever it seems to want to.

why is it booting off? is it a feature of XP to boot off if someone calls? I have cable internet so i dont know what to tell them or what steps to take to fix it.

    help :(

    Hello Kitten
We may need a bit more info on this one.
What operating system (OS) was on the computer before you put XP on ??
Did this problem occur with the previous OS ??

I assume when you say "booting off the internet" you mean the dialup modem loses connection to the ISP ??
If that be the case, Newt or one of the other staff members might choose to move this to the Hardware section.

The first thing I would check would be the modem in the computer, is it a Winmodem or a hardware modem.
Some winmodems are very critical to telephone line noise.
Hardware modems are more forgiving to line noise.

I'll stop here until you can post back some answers and let other "helpers" go over your post.

it was Win98se and was trouble free for 3 years. with the recent news of no more updates for 98 coming out and it being removed from the update site, my friends bought XP.

I was thinking it might be a feature of XP that keeps kicking the internet connection off. I know aol seems to have a new feature that lets you know when you have an incoming call on the same phone line that your modem is using. i thought XP might being doing something similar to that.

yesterday while i was downloading the critical updates the computer tried to disconect 3 times in the 2 hours it took to download and install the information. at the same time, voice messages were left from calls during that 2 hour block.

that is why i posted this here instead of under the ie forum. i thought it might be a feature that i would never experience with my cable modem.

    Hello Lucky,

When setting up a dial-up service, a number of questions are asked about the line.

Two that come to mind given the problem:

Is the service pulse or tone?

Is there call waiting? Call waiting will disrupt the computer if not accounted for.

    Regards - Charles
